Question for our #plant people here. I'm finding many little Japanese maple seedlings growing in my front lawn, as the helicopters released over the last few weeks have sprouted. I am hoping to do something before the mowers come and put an end to their happy growth.

I've tried in previous years to 'transplant' a few into a small pot, but always failed at keeping them alive.

Any hints? Treat them as a house plant? Put them outside and try to remember to water them? It would be neat to keep a baby going this year.

All help appreciated.

A very small Japanese maple (the non-weeping red form, Bloodgood) is growing up in a lawn, about the same height as the grass. If I wait another week, it will get mowed down. There are quite a few, but this is one with very nice leaves. This "tree" is actually just 2 cut-edged leaves on opposite sides from each other, and two un-cut petals that probably contained the seed. They are all a very deep blood red. The grass in the picture is misleadingly green, as we've not had much rain, and what I have for lawn now is mostly weeds and brown grass.
