New research finds #fluorescence in feathers of Long-eared Owls
phys.org/news/2025-04-fluoresc

Fluorescent pigment concentration correlated with age, sex, and size in #LongEaredOwl (Asio otus) plumage tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.10

"female Long-eared #Owls have a much higher concentration of these pigments in their feathers, challenging a common misconception that colorful #plumage is a male trait... We are only beginning to describe fluorescent pigments in #birds and other vertebrates"

Study Finds That #BirdsOfParadise Are Biofluorescent amnh.org/about/press-center/bi paper: royalsocietypublishing.org/doi

"an organism absorbs light, transforms it, and emits it as a different color... This phenomenon is especially prominent in males, focused on their bright plumage and skin in areas that are highlighted during displays: the inner mouth and bill, feet, and feathers on the head, neck, and belly... pigments in the #birds’ eyes align with the #fluorescence peaks"

Takashi Kawase has released a #linux version of VVDViewer (github.com/JaneliaSciComp/VVDV), a powerful volume renderer (#scivis, #sciviz) for #fluorescence #microscopy data. To celebrate, here is a video rendered by VVDViewer as driven by the Linux version of neuVid. The input to neuVid is a high-level description of the video, in this case showing four #drosophila lines from the #HHMIJanelia FlyLight Gen1 MCFO collection. The input text is pretty simple... (1/3)
