Oemleria cerasiformis, osoberry. An open raceme of pendant flowers on long pedicels, with small white petals. I think these are male flowers - you can't quite make it out at this resolution but the stamens are fully developed and pollen-bearing. We're looking at the flowers from the side.

Oemleria cerasiformis, osoberry. Looking up into a group of flowers from below. I think these are female - vestigal stamens without pollen, and visible ovaries. Grey sky in the backgorund.

Ribes sanguineum, red-flowered currant. A raceme of flowers handging from a twig. At the base of the raceme, three leaves, sort of five-lobed cordate with deep creasing. The flower cluster is opening from the top down; four flowers are open and there are many more buds waiting. The sepals are pink and open wide, looking like petals, and the much smaller white petals remain in a tube-like shape sheltering the stamens & pistil.

Salix, willow. Against a completely blurred out light grey background, a twig with four flowering staminate (pollen-producing) catkins. On each catkin, the unopened pollinia are bright orange, and the open ones are bright yellow with pollen; the rest of the structure is a pale green that contrasts pleasingly with the orange. When the garden was planted ca 1984, several species of willow were included, so this volunteer tree might be a cross of two of those trees.

A brace of bright golden yellow goblet-shaped flowers with strong brown striping from the base. We're looking at the outside, from near ground level. In the BG more flowers.
Crocus 'Golden Yellow'. Pacific Bulb Society says this is syn C. 'Dutch Yellow' and C. 'Yellow Mammoth', as a cross of C. flavus and C. angustifolius. The KAVB database lists it as a species selection, C. flavus ssp flavus 'Golden Yellow', with no origin or date.

Looking up from below at a round cluseter of yellow flowers. Each is a long white tube covered in silky white hairs, and opens at the end in golden four-petalled blooms with a distinct group of four stamens. What you can't see it the scent, a rich and string floral type perfume. In the BG, sky and cloud.
Edgeworthia chrysantha.

A cluster of pale blue flowers with defined blue streaks and reticulation, strong patches of yellow on the fall, and an ambiguous greenish halo around it. Soil and leaves in the BG.
Iris 'Katharine Hodgkin' (E.B. Anderson, 1958). Reportedly Iris winogradowii × Iris histrioides.

On a deep blue sky, several branches with scattered magenta-pink flowers. The branches are otherwise bare.
The first sakura to bloom for us every year, mislabelled Prunus sargentii but more closely resembling Prunus campanulata or one of its hybrids like P. ‘Okame’.

Whenever I get a chance to see another Rosaceae family plant's buds emerging, I take a look to compare it to how almond emerges.

It shows a developmental progression from a shield-like scale with notches at the top showing fused stipules to more compound leaves of green that will emerge in a few days.

One of the leaves of my Drosera capensis, a carnivorous plant that has helped control the gnat population in my indoor garden. Saw it catching the sun and figured it deserved a photo!

A thin, tongue-shaped green leave extends out and curls downward slightly, bristling with very long red tendrils that are tipped with clear droplets of fluid. These droplets are glimmering in reflected sunlight.

Position Overview:
The University of California, Agriculture and Natural Resources (UC ANR) invites applications for a UC Cooperative Extension Area Orchard Systems Advisor, serving Stanislaus and San Joaquin Counties. The successful candidate will implement an innovative multi-county extension education and applied research program that will focus on almonds and pistachios in Stanislaus County and peaches and apricots in Stanislaus and San Joaquin Counties. Disciplinary focus will be on orchard production systems, nutrient management, pest management, water efficiency, and soil fertility and health.

There are two almond blocks separated by a dirt road in the research orchards I visit most often. One block is already mostly through blooming and leaves are significantly emerged. The northernmost orchard is a litle behind. It's blooming, but the leaves haven't really popped yet.

Photo taken through a 10x loupe. A short spur ending in both a floral bud and a leaf bud are on the end. The floral bud has gotten a bit fat but is still fully closed. The leaf bud has started to emerge from the brown bud scales, but the leaves are still pale and packed together into a point pointing straight up from where it's emerging.
