Fewer farmers, changing diets, outdated agricultural policies and even an earthquake scare have contributed to price rises affecting Japanese rice. https://www.japantimes.co.jp/life/2025/04/07/food-drink/rice-shortage-japan-reserves/?utm_medium=Social&utm_source=mastodon #life #fooddrink #rice #food #agriculture #climatechange #heatwaves
Changing our diets and ways of producing food is crucial to combat climate change and increase human health. A key change is lessening the impact of meat and animal products like eggs and dairy.

Update. "Leaked Memo Reveals Insane Ban on Words Agriculture Department Can Say"
https://newrepublic.com/post/193395/agriculture-department-ban-words-safe-drinking-water
"A leaked memo from the U.S. Department of #Agriculture’s Research Service division revealed Sunday that the agency has banned some key language from its vocabulary, including the words “climate” and “vulnerable,” as well as the phrase “safe drinking water.” Other baffling entries on the memo’s banned language list are “greenhouse gas emissions,” “methane emissions,” “sustainable construction,” “solar energy,” and “geothermal,” as well as “nuclear energy,” “diesel,” “affordable housing,” “prefabricated housing,” “runoff,” “microplastics,” “water pollution,” “soil pollution,” “groundwater pollution,” “sediment remediation,” “water collection,” “water treatment,” “rural water,” and “clean water,” among dozens of others."
"Big Data applications are intrinsically socio-technical; their development and deployment are a product of social interactions between people, institutional and regulatory settings, as well as the technology itself. "

Mastodon! I'm delivering a talk to a couple of grade 9 classes in a month on the use of space (mainly satellites, but probes to other planets, comets, etc., will be included).
How does your work benefit from satellites?
I'm thinking of a direct use of the data, as opposed to stuff like “internet access” or “my bank relies on satellites to transfer my grant money from one account to another”
Anecdotes, rants, personal stories are all fair game
(To the inevitable suggestion that I just Google this, yes, I can, and have, but I want the human element - I want to be able to say "someone I ‘know’ uses satellites for their job, and this is what they like about the tech”)
Hashtag suggestions are welcome.
(Also - question: Does Mastodon discriminate hashtags with different capitalization? Are #Astronomy and #astronomy functionally different? We *really* need some kind of ISO standard )

House #sparrows, once one of the most common #bird species, are becoming increasingly rare in #Europe. Several studies have already shown a direct link between the decline in species and industrialised #agriculture ( #herbicides, #insecticides, #glyphosat).
A new #study shows chronic exposure to #tebuconazole, a widely used #fungicide impairing offspring growth and survival in farmland birds

Idaho lawmaker's family farm raided by ICE
I'm so impressed by this reporter. He also reported on the West Ada County school district that went after a teacher for her "Everyone is welcome here" poster.
In this climate, in a state as full of fucking Nazis as Idaho has become, this kind of reporting takes bravery. They're lucky to have this guy.

The bee population die off that has stricken the United States agricultural sector is a four alarm fire.
They don’t have a solid idea why this is happening, but this die off is occurring in parallel to the mass die off of insect populations all over the world and the unraveling of the food web.
