My wife and our friend found an ancient Shintō shrine full of lore that was nevertheless deserted on a busy weekend in Kyōto. Konoshima Jinja (木嶋神社) or Kaiko no Yashiro (蚕の社) features a rare three-legged torii gate, symbolizing stability and a connection between the spiritual and physical realms. Going back as far as the beginning of the 8th Century, considerably before Kyōto became the capital, the shrine is mainly dedicated to silkworms, as silk has played an important cultural role in Kyōto's history.
The three-legged torii gate also alludes to the three-legged crow Yatagarasu (八咫烏), regarded as a divine messenger. Important Kyōto shrines like Yasaka Jinja and Kamigamo Jinja along with the Imperial family have associated themselves with the Yatagarasu, yet I found that the cult actually goes back to Chinese and Korean mythology.
Hidden Christians appropriated the 3-legged torii as the Trinity.

This week's #MythologyMonday theme is time. The personification of time in #GreekMythology is Chronos (Χρονος), not to be confused with Kronos (Κρονος), the dad of Zeus and his siblings. The conflation of the two occurred in antiquity but became more widespread during the Renaissance, which is why Father Time wields the harvesting scythe of Kronos in modern iconography. In Orphism he is a two-sexed deity born from Hydros (water) and Gaia (earth).

Thoth was an Egyptian moon god. The moon's phases made it pivotal in early astrology / astronomy, and its cycles organized much of Egyptian society's rituals and events. Thus, Thoth became seen as a god of wisdom, and of the measurement and regulation of events and time.

Side note: this isn't completely out of left field. IIRC #archeology texts in the Middle East from a couple thousand years ago sometimes speak of "Yahweh and his Asherah". One scholar said, "We don't know exactly what an Asherah was, but Jehovah definitely had one." (sorry, can't find the reference at the moment).
Asherah was apparently a "consort" of Yahweh/Jehovah in early worship/mythology. She was explicitly female and explicitly sexually involved with #Yahweh ("consort" apparently means they were banging it out).
Asherah was apparently not the same as Ishtar, but I figured few people would have any knowledge of Asherah.

#FolkloreThursday: `There are many stories of the #Irish Wolfhound in #mythology. The most famous hounds are, without doubt, #Fionn’s two favourites, Bran and Sceolán. They were said to have been so tall, that their heads reached chest height to a man. Bran was described as ‘ferocious, white-breasted, sleek-haunched, with fiery deep black eyes that swim in sockets of blood’. Sceolán was slightly smaller, ‘small-headed, with the eyes of a dragon, claws of a wolf, vigour of a lion, and the venom of a serpent’. They feature as prominently in the exploits of the Fianna as do the warriors themselves.` #Celtic #NationalPetsMonth
