when i was a kid growing up in the subarctic, i'd walk a few blocks from my house to go fishing down at the river after school
every time i walked there, i'd step over a railway that crossed the road. it was half-buried in the muddy gravel, and i was fascinated that it just ...... ended..... in a ditch, on the other side of the road. i never once saw a train car on it.
sometimes i'd throw rocks at the rusting hulk of a tugboat across the ditch, hoping to make a metallic thwak.
TIL that those last 10 feet of rail was the very end of canada's northernmost railway. i had no idea growing up, and i doubt anyone else i grew up with knew it either.
