Ever since a PhD student introduced me to the idea, stolonization has been haunting my waking hours. Now it can haunt yours too: some annelid worms develop a gamete-filled structure (stolon), which detaches and swims to find a mate. Some stolons have eyes, antennae, and nervous system 🤯

The image shows female (left) and male (right) stolons which detach from their seafloor-dwelling 'parent' organism and swim to seek each other out.

@kashcah Yes, I feed the worms with food scraps throughout the year. Sometimes with well fermented pre-bokashi compost but mostly with normal food scraps. I just have the one worm box buried in the plot. It’s buried approx 45 cm/18” deep.

The box has no bottom just one centre brace. It is just four sides with a lid.

I harvest wormcast whenever I need some for the seedling mix or for making a wormcast extract or for adding to the growing beds.

We have a couple of thermal #compost bins, which generate a lot of #worms. But the worms like to move up to the rim of the bins and have — let's be honest — an orgy. Every time I open the bin, some of them get cut or crushed. It would be safer for them if they could have their fun lower down.

Am I doing something wrong, or is this just what worms normally do?
