#Republican #House just passed a bill that would require people prove they were US citizens when they registered to #vote, 220-208, w/4 #Democrats joining #Republicans. The bill, which is unlikely to make it through the #Senate, echoes an EO #Trump signed last month as part of his push to tighten voting laws tied to his #BigLie.

It is already against the #law for noncitizens to vote in federal elections, & there is NO evidence of voting by noncitizens.

The #House narrowly adopted the #Republican #budget blueprint for slashing taxes for the very #wealthy & #corporations & government #spending, overcoming the concerns of budget hard-liners who fear it will balloon the nation’s #debt. The vote was a victory for Speaker #MikeJohnson, who put down a rebellion from deficit hawks, & #Trump, who had stepped up pressure on reluctant #Republicans.

"I know this reads like a bunch of procedural jargon.

In normal speak, what is happening here is the House is getting ready to vote to begin debate on its budget resolution -- and when it does, it is also voting to BAR ITSELF from taking action to stop Trump's tariffs.

Dems seizing on this provision being tucked into the rule for the budget res:

🚨“A vote for this rule is a vote for Trump’s tariffs," says Rep D Beyer.

I just had one of those random but not-so-random memory moments:

Does anyone remember 2013?

#Obama just won another term and the #GOP was wringing its hands about what to do to stop losing

seattletimes.com/seattle-news/

"#Louisiana Gov. Bobby #Jindal called on the #Republican Party to "stop being the #stupid party" on Thursday as GOP leaders promised fundamental changes to help stave off future losses"

Yeah... about that "GOP stop being the party of stupid"

😬

"The damage isn't theoretical... Trade routes are shifting. Investment is diversifying. Global power is rebalancing... All of it is premised on a hard-earned truth: the #UnitedStates cannot be trusted to lead. Not because of one man but because of what half the country has chosen to normalize. Not because of #Trump alone but because every institution built to restrain him failed & then got in line."

"Got to say it takes a lot of nerve for #RFKjr to attend the funeral of a child he's at least partly responsible for killing."

I saw that, and thought as I have so many times lately that the #Republican party has lost all sense of appropriate optics and is simply running full speed ahead into whatever wall it's created for itself

And for good measure the #GOP will then slam its hand in whatever door is available

A political party of bomb-throwing loose cannons
