One of the 1 of 200 hosts asks Marx whether Canada has considered MMP. Apparently they have, but the liberals and conservatives keep blocking it.

I recommend citizens who want proportional representation in their countries campaign for STV, not MMP. I say that having voted in elections using both MMP (NZ general elections since 1996) and STV (some local body elections).

If you're in the LA area on Saturday March 29 and you want to help build a better, more representative, multi-party democracy in California, please go to the ProRep Coalition's Rally for Democracy! I can't go because it's far and we don't have high speed rail. Yet.

Thanks @cabinradio for taking the time to talk to me about #proportionalrepresentation. It’s more important now than ever. #yellowknife locals hit me up at Birchwood this evening to learn more and talk about how we can put the pressure on our govt to abandon our antiquated electoral system. cabinradio.ca/225504/news/poli

#ProportionalRepresentation makes a huge difference - people’s votes actually count. In Canada’s system, the vast majority of votes are wasted, for example people in a riding that consistently votes overwhelmingly for one party.

“I’m writing to let you know about a change coming to our opinion pages. We are going to be writing every day in support and defense of two pillars: personal liberties and free markets,” Bezos said."

The way that #Canadian news sources talk about #ProportionalRepresentation reminds me of the "teach the controversy" thing around evolution and climate change at this point.
The political hurricanes have been slamming the last couple of established democracies with First Past the Post yet they still act like Germany, Taiwan, Italy, Spain, New Zealand, Poland, Japan, Greece, Switzerland, the EU and every Scandinavian country are running some sort of unusual system.
We are the weirdos.

How do people feel about the anglosphere news outlets always having these asides to explain how democracies usually work?
“There was an election yesterday in <Basically any county with a stable democracy> and with THIS COUNTRY, you have to form this thing called a coalition”
Then they get excited about a radical party that failed to form government picking up seats for a few minutes, talk about how long it’ll take to form a coalition, piece then ends.

@msbellows

Why don’t countries with #ProportionalRepresentation have the problems the countries with First Past the Post do?

"The problem isn't the two-party system”

~1% are actual sociopaths like Trump and Musk, ~15% have limited empathy and can readily be turned to the dark side. The rest of us need to collaborate, which is what PR helps with.

"The problem is that nearly half of humans are assholes, and the rest of us need to collaborate to keep smacking them the fuck down."

It's proved to be one of the downsides of MMP, that down-list candidates can become MPs with little to no public scrutiny of their character or background. In hindsight I wish the electorate had chosen STV over MMP in the first referendum. Where they choose which proportional election system would go head-to-head against FPP in the second part of the referendum.

There's a debate on proportional representation coming up in Westminster soon!! parliament.uk/business/news/20 This Thurs 30th Jan.

You can use writetothem.com to find your MP by postcode and then send an email. Even a very brief email is enough, something like:

"I hope you will attend Thursday's debate on proportional representation in Westminster, and speak in favour."

You can add more if you want, of course. :)
