Look what arrived today, my first Sarracenias! S. flava and S. leucophylla are both Alabama natives. Hopefully in a few years we can start selling Sarracenia but I've got a lot to learn before that happens.

"OK folks, listen up - tailgate meeting. I know it's been a slow couple of days what with it being cool and windy as sin. But today's looking better so we may get the first pollinators today. Be ready - it's been a long winter and they're counting on us. For the newbies: don't mind the ants - they're just curious. Ok, on three, ready - one two bloom!"

Why is it so hard to find birdseed made from native plants? This is literally the only option I've found so far:

Is it that people are not growing native plants in sufficient quantities to feed them to birds instead of planting to grow more native plants? Does it not occur to people that birds help spread the seeds that they eat?

April 14, 2025. The honey berry shrubs started blooming. They bloom a few days after the pussy willow trees. The earliest flying pollinators will have natural food. Native plants with early blooms are good habitat. #minnesota, #zone4b, #pollinators, #growyourown, #nativeplants, #haskaps.
I came across this website from one of the #GuerillaGardening articles I posted earlier. Some good stuff!

Welcome the wild bees
A honey bee and much smaller native bee share a Phacelia bloom. The native may be a Halictus or Lasioglossum
I have tried a few times to photograph the flowers of thin leaf huckleberry (Vaccinium membranaceum), but things happened. Today I was successful at catching an image or two. The flowers are very delicate and open for a day or two before they drop, while the berry takes a few months to ripen.

One of my favorite flowers, the very ephemeral bloodroot, Sanginaria canadensis has made its appearance. Native to most of the eastern half of the US and southern Canada, it’s an early spring pollen and nectar source for native pollinators. The seeds are dispersed by ants.
This photo is exciting to me. I bought this Pacific crabapple (Malus fusca) 5 years ago. It did not bloom...and then yesterday I saw flower buds all over it!
My daughter was all agog too.
