A pink flowering cherry tree at the UofW with interestingly twisted branches shades a brick walkway in the quad. The quad is full of students. The skynis somewhat overcast. There are laurel bushes lining the walkway on the right.

A smooth green lawn separates the brick and pink sandstonefacade of a university building from pink flowering cherry trees that shade a few benches with students seated and reading. The building looks very much like 19th century public edifices with tall windows and roofline ornamantation.

Amelanchier x grandiflora, downy serviceberry, has beautiful pink to white flowers and downy sage colored stems. It's a lovely, unusual looking small street tree which has a showy display of vivid colors in fall.

A small clump of 5 petaled hellebore flowers with purple shading grace the front of a school building. They have purple stems and are growing among small succulent groundcover plants.

The petals are technically sepals, something of interest only to botanists and flower specialists. I just now learned that most species of hellebores have flowers that face downwards. If you want to see their pretty markings, it's best to plant them where they'll be at eye height.

A bright yellow skunk cabbage flower spadix pushes out of its yellow spathe. It is growing out of a cluster of large, intensely green, oval leaves which will soon be the largest leaves in the area. This plant was growing on the side of a trail in muddy soil, surrounded by ferns and plant duff.

We found one pale pink salmonberry (Rubus spectabilis) bush in bloom, promising insipid fruit in fall. Although the birds love them. No accounting for taste.

Here they are again! Arctic sweet coltsfoot (Petasites frigidus) on a warm sunny PNW day. I decided the dog and I should check out the muddy trails to see if anything was finally blooming, and anything was!

Arctic sweet coltsfoot or butterburr is blooming amid its big palmate leaves in Cowen Park. The flowers are collected in an umbel of composite blooms. Each composite is made of pink to white tubular flowers tightly packed together, a bit like dandelions. These plants like swampy soil, which I once discovered my to my chagrin. The dog was pretty well muddled up too.

A multi-petaled star magnolia flower opens on a cool spring day. The bottom of the petals are tinted light pink, but the rest are a fine French vanilla color. Time for ice cream! There are buds next to the flower, looking like little brown fuzzy mice. One bud is starting to open into another vanilla blossoms.

Some yellows seen while walking the dog this morning (in the wind). He loves cold weather and wind. Maybe we should move to the North Pole. Meanwhile I hope you're not allergic to willow pollen.

A spray of bright yellow four-petaled forsythia flowers curls up toward the sky against a backdrop of shrubby branches starting to leaf out.

Three willow catkins in a willow tree are in various stages of maturity, one in front with stamens widely splayed, on at the top with stamens just starting to exert and one at the bottom showing its ripening stamens. The anthers are bright yellow and full of pollen, ready to attack people with allergies.

Lunch time cumulus clouds heading east. I read that these indicate fair weather. Ha. They were piling up against the mountains and produced a hailstorm and downpour and wind this afternoon.
