The measles outbreak in Ontario is impacting more than 800 people, including the vaccinated.

Among the fully vaccinated sick with measles, 20-39 year olds have the largest number of infections.

I would have assumed it would be older groups due to waning vaccine effectiveness… so this intrigues me.

More people with young children? More socializing? What’s the X factor? Are repeat Covid infections playing a role?

You can speak to your doctor about getting a titre check to see if you need a booster, and a well fitted respirator like an N95 provides an extra layer of protection!

The man in charge of HHS used the R slur in an FDA meeting where he derided children with disabilities as well as people with autism.

This is the man in charge of health and human services for the entire United States.

RFK Jr is a snake oil salesman and a eugenicist. He speaks of disabled people as though they don’t deserve to live, and I truly believe that’s what he thinks of us.

He’s not going to cure autism (it’s not something that needs to be cured). He’s not going to cure the chronic disease epidemic.

He’s going to disappear us. Whether in ‘wellness camps’ or by making it impossible to access the treatments and supports we need to survive.

This article is deeply distressing:

bloomberg.com/news/articles/20

Living with chronic illness is hard enough without letting guilt stop us from accessing what we need.

Capitalism & ableism have conditioned us to see rest as a failure. To feel bad for needing accommodations.

Accessibility IS resistance. Survival is a way of fighting back.

Rest. Get that mobility aid. Ask for help.

The MAHA movement claims to want to “make America healthy again”… and RFK Jr says he will end the chronic disease epidemic.

Yet we’ve seen no plans to improve the health or life of the chronically ill, and many plans that will end our lives faster.

Anti vaccine sentiment. Cuts to Medicare and Medicaid. Mask bans. Increase in the use of the R slur and various ableist attitudes.

Today Trump announced a tariff on pharmaceuticals, which will devastate the disability community.

We already live below the poverty line, often on a fixed income that barely covers the essentials. We can’t withstand economic uncertainty and supply chain disruptions as well as our non disabled peers.

This is another step in escalating eugenics. The Nazis targeted disabled people too… because they knew no one would stand up for us.

Please fight for us. Wear a mask. Call your elected officials. Reach out a hand in support.

Don’t leave anyone behind.

Just thinking of how easily I've been paid less, laid off, bullied, etc because people didn't like an outspoken disabled woman...

Yet folks tolerate or even promote the malignant failsons running the country right now.

Stop the failsons early - stop bullying marginalized people and instead draw the line with privileged fucking fascists early in their development. #USpol #Ableism #Sexism #Capitalism

Over 600 measles cased now and nearly 500 in Texas, alone. And another death, bringing the total deaths to 3, all in unvaccinated people.

Meanwhile, 2 infants have died from pertussis (whooping cough), also on the rise due to antivax hysteria.

3 might not seem like a lot, except they were all preventable with the vax, which is one of the safest and most effective vaccines available, providing life time immunity to 97% of those who receive it.

But this is likely only the tip of the iceberg. Likely far more than 600 cases. Likely more deaths to follow. And, if this outbreak continues into January, the WHO will likely take away the U.S. status as being a measles-free nation, putting us in the category as many poor countries in the global south.

To those who feel vaccination is their choice, keep in mind that it's a choice they are imposing, nonconsensually, on millions of their neighbors who have no immunity through no fault of their own (eg infants aren't vaccinated until at least 12 mos; people on immune suppressing medications; people with immune supressing diseases). Also keep in mind that measles is so infectious that a single infected individual can infect up to 90% of the unvaccinated and immune compromised individuals they meet. And also keep in mind that even if it doesn't kill you, measles can erase your immune memory, making you much more susceptible to other deadly infections. It can also cause lifetime hearing impairment and potentially deadly brain damage that hits years after a measles infection.

@jpaskaruk
Good protest numbers are good - doubt you'd find any of us who disagrees with that. I don't agree with full stop though because that's an exclusionary statement & it's been used on disabled by ableists far too often. We are the ones who frontlined for years & we are now unable to join in because it is too unsafe & we are considered as shitdisturbers if we bring up that fact. It's also fascist adjacent to be OK with many disabled people feeling unsafe.

Please understand what we disabled folks have typed about why we can't go to huge events anymore & still feel safe at them. We feel the our choices have been taken from us because ableist society still rules over all.

#Ableism is directly connected to #fascism gaining more powers.

@hannu_ikonen

“The best way you can include the disability community in resistance efforts is to ensure they’re accessible. Often we want to participate only to find out that masks aren’t required, an event is being held in a space that isn’t accessible and/or online options aren’t being provided”

If you’re feeling left out of the #HandsOff protests, or you want to find ways to resist online, my chronic illness spoon saving guide has you covered.

To non disabled activists, please make your events accessible. Disabled people have a ton to offer resistance efforts, make sure to include us!

Today in Labor History April 5, 1977: U.S. disability rights activist stormed and occupied the offices of the US Department of Health, Education, and Welfare (HEW) in Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Denver, Los Angeles, New York City, Philadelphia, San Francisco, and Seattle. They demanded enactment of section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, which had passed Congress four years prior. The law mandated that no federally funded programs could exclude persons with disabilities and put into place legal protections, and the right to accommodations, for students with disabilities. During the prior four years, HEW director Joseph Califano repeatedly delayed enactment of the law, while regulations were weakened to benefit business interests. During the San Francisco protests, disability rights activists Judith Heumann, Kitty Cone, and Mary Jane Owen organized a 25-day occupation of the US Federal Building with 150 other activists. Solidarity support from the Black Panthers, allied politicians, and the International Association of Machinists, who provided food, mattresses, wheelchairs, and other equipment, and helped a delegation get to Washington, D.C. The regulations for section 504 were ultimately signed into law on 28 April, 1977.

Even now the Dems (and I've even seen Canadian politicians doing this) cannot stop with the reactionary "working families" rhetoric for places where "the public", 'people" will do, stuff that is not specific to working families.

It signals who is thought to be "worthy" of life. Disabled people, childless people, childfree people, people with bad families or no family are expendable in this political calculation. #Fascism #USpol #Ableism #Sexism #Natalism

If you want to understand the horrifying future these tech billionaire nazis have in store for humanity, it helps to understand what parts of our "glorious past" as a species they're looking to recreate. This interview with University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign information sciences and media studies professor Anita Say Chan talks a bit about the history of data and eugenics, what it means that guys like Elon Musk and Peter Thiel (along with most of Silicon Valley's movers and shakers) are devout believers in eugenicist philosophies, and how that's reflected in their efforts to reshape society in horrifying, and objectively fascist ways. In terms of our discussion about the uber rich fascists who heavily influence the Trump regime they bought and paid for, I'm mostly including this here to point out that these guys have gone on record in support of a lot of openly fascist shit and for the most part, your media pretends we don't already know these guys are nazis; it's not a secret, it's just not "worth mentioning" when media orgs are fawning over technofascist billionaires destroying our planet and our lives.

Eugenics Isn’t Dead—It’s Thriving in Tech

"Big Tech successors like Musk and PayPal billionaire-turned-arms dealer Peter Thiel have overtly promoted fraudulent race science, with Musk amplifying users on X who argue that people of European descent are biologically superior. In response to another user’s deleted post suggesting that students at historically Black institutions have lower IQs, Musk posted, “It will take an airplane crashing and killing hundreds of people for them to change this crazy policy of DIE”—diversity, equity, and inclusion, misspelled. In 2016, Thiel buddied up to a prominent white nationalist, and, the same year, was said by a Stanford dorm-mate to have complimented South Africa’s “economically sound” system of racial apartheid."

@ChrisMayLA6 Furthermore, if it's anything like in the US and I suspect it is, both schools and workplaces resist any legal obligations to be accessible.

It is a constructed Catch-22. They will not create accessible schooling, training, or workplaces. And they will treat disabled people as "cheaters" and "scroungers" if inaccessible schooling and workplaces keep them out of careers. #Ableism #Capitalism

Starting July 26th, 2020 (the 30th Anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act), UC Access Now and allies started sending emails to the Governor, the UC Board of Regents, and every UC chancellor to read and act on the UC Access Now Demandifesto.

Our Governor mentions his dyslexia when it's convenient for him, but he never bothered answering the hundreds of people who wrote him about the systemic ableism within UC.

""Gov. Gavin Newsom recently sent burner phones to major California business leaders with his number preprogrammed — paid for by his nonprofit, allowing him to communicate with executives without having to disclose the content publicly.""

Ah. That's why.

I am flying with Porter Air next month. I just called them up to see if someone would be able to help me put my carry-on luggage in the overhead since I am unable to reach overhead due to my disability.

They told me that they absolutely cannot and will not do this, as it is a liability. I'm expected to put my medication, laptop, and medical devices in the main luggage if I can't move it myself.

Why is this their policy when their website says they will assist me with my carry-on luggage?

I keep saying this is a powerful moment for intersectionality, because it is.

There are more of us than there are of them. That’s how we fight fascism. That’s how we fight discrimination, racism, bigotry, ableism and more.

We join together. We lead by example. We learn from one another.

We refuse to be divided and refuse to be siloed.

My substack is about disability justice, but I’m passionate about helping all marginalized and oppressed individuals.

I stand against authoritarianism and fascism. Against hate. Against division.

I stand for love, compassion, inclusion, knowledge and above all else… Community. We can do this.
