A Short History of Trans Misogyny (Jules Gill-Peterson) – Between the Hijras under the British Raj, the genocide of two-spirit people by the US, and the persecution of transvesti in Latin America, this book demonstrates that the persecution of groups often now identified as trans massively predates the modern concept of trans women. This book outlines how deeply ingrained trans misogyny is in our society and its connections with aspects of class and race.

It's a vital and challenging read in outlining the inherent violence of trans misogyny, how broadly it impacts peoples swept up under medicalised labels, and how the broader gay rights movement abandoned those who started it.

It’s become a bit of a tradition for me to read some cute sapphic hallmark-esque romcoms over Christmas. It's my way of getting into a cosy vibe as it gets dark. Here are a few I've read over the past few years;

In the Event of Love – after a career snafu, Morgan returns to her home town and falls for her lumberjack ex-gf as she tries to save the tree farm from bigcorp. lgbtqia.space/@jaelisp/1115740

Make You Mine This Christmas – fake dating a guy at his countryside mansion to please his parents but then falling for his sister. app.thestorygraph.com/reviews/

The Christmas Swap – fake dating a guy at his countryside mansion to please his parents but then falling for his sister. Wait, that sounds familiar. But don't worry, it's different! lgbtqia.space/@jaelisp/1115903

A Purrfect Gift – a cute novella about two women brought together by a thieving, matchmaking cat. lgbtqia.space/@jaelisp/1116013

The Nightmare Before Kissmas – The Prince of Christmas falls in love with the Prince of Halloween and launches a coup against capitalism. lgbtqia.space/@jaelisp/1135342

Otherworldly – demigods, romance, and a quest for immortality (not strictly *christmas*, but wintry). lgbtqia.space/@jaelisp/1135208

Book 51 of 2024

Spear by Nicola Griffith

4.5 stars

A lyrical retelling of the story of Percival from Arthurian legend with a feminist lens and sapphic romance for good measure.

Griffith is one of my favorite living writers, so I knew I was going to love this. Her prose here is stunning, as always, and the historical setting is so well-researched that it jumps off the page. I have a passing familiarity with basic Arthuriana but had to look up some of the more obscure stories and Irish myths. It was fun learning more, and also getting to dissect the choices Griffith made in taking creative license and fleshing out the original stories. The afterward was particularly illuminating, and I loved her intentional inclusion of diverse characters in a medieval setting.

Through sheer coincidence (i.e. the timing of my library holds) I ended up reading two genderbent Arthurian retellings back to back! It was occasionally confusing to keep track of the different origins and characterizations of some of the characters, plus the different spellings of their names. But that's certainly no fault of Griffith or Reeve's, and both books were immensely enjoyable!

The House in the Cerulean Sea (T.J. Klune) – Linus Baker is a caseworker for the Department in Charge Of Magical Youth where he has progressed little over his quiet life. Each time inspecting orphanages of magical youth, he rigorously applies the RULES AND REGULATIONS that guides how magical people should be handled in this world of quiet but persistent discrimination. What becomes of the children in the orphanages he issues a negative report on, he has never quite considered.

His life of quiet compliance is interrupted when he is given a confidential case from Extremely Upper Management, who’s taken note of his rigorous application of the rules. A remote island orphanage that is home to six children classified as extremely dangerous including “a gnome, a sprite, a wyvern, an unidentifiable green blob, a were-Pomeranian, and the Antichrist” under the tutelage of a headmaster who has little regard for rules and regulations.

During Linus’ stay, he starts to see beyond the classifications ascribed by the department to see the beautiful dreams and gentle souls the children have. Little risk comes from the playful antichrist, the nearby villagers on the other hand pose a far more menacing threat thanks to the department’s ever-present fearmongering. And as he comes to care for the children, Linus begins to fall for their tender-hearted headmaster.

I found this incredibly sweet and hopeful in how it wove together this found family creating safety for each other to heal in the face of a world that doesn’t accept them. It might come across to sweet or YA for some people, but it gave me a lot of comfort and smiles given how stressful the world is at the moment.
