Media Diary (March 2025)
Here’s some stuff I’ve experienced lately (and not necessarily only new releases). In addition, our free Stream Team community has a lot more daily action happening on the recommendations front too.
Dope Thief (TV): It has no right to be this good
Mickey 17 (Movie): Smart and fun
Health and Safety: A Breakdown (Book): Wouldn’t want to hang out with any of these people, but found it fascinating
Adolescence (TV): Honestly astounding, and very difficult to watch at times
Chaos: The Manson Murders (Movie): Obviously I’ll watch anything from Errol Morris, and the larger conspiracy theory was interesting (I tend to be more Occam’s Razor-y on it, but who knows?)
James (Book): Was a fan, makes me want to read Huck Finn again
The Studio (TV): Just premiered, but very, very good already
Sly Lives! (aka the Burden of Black Genius) (Movie): What an epic run
The Righteous Gemstones (TV): So glad they’re back in my life
Companion (Movie): Not lifechanging, but fun overall
Daredevil: Born Again (TV): This is really heating up
Pink Flamingos (Movie): Rewatched for Stream Team after last seeing probably 30 years ago, and we all had feelings (check out the replay)
Gold & Greed: The Hunt for Fenn’s Treasure (TV): Goofy and fun
The Electric State (Movie): This was average, totally didn’t deserve the absolutely brutal reviews
The Americas (TV): Thank you for your service, Tom
The #C2E2 app is updated for 2025. Don’t forget to attend our #HWAChicagolandChapter panel two weeks from today on April 12. You can even favorite those of us who’ll be speaking about “The Horror that Made Us.” It makes us feel special.

Reading The Message by Ta-nehisi Coates this morning and man, does it hit hard right now. #tanehisicoates #bookstodon #books @bookstodon
My #bookreview is brief/won't spoil, to spread good, great, & spectacular #horror #books far & wide.
HAUNTED ECOLOGIES bursts, BLEEDS with a respect and reverence of Nature from veins of sorrow. Corey Farrenkopf brings an elegant, quiet desperation to these poignant tales of humanity's actions against our world and each other: mysteries and wonders still exist but are not infinite resources. One question I often use at book club if the discussion runs down is "what did you learn from this book that surprised you?" For THE LIGHT EATERS: HOW THE UNSEEN WORLD OF PLANT INTELLIGENCE OFFERS A NEW UNDERSTANDING OF LIFE ON EARTH, by Zoë Schlanger, you could ask that question for almost every chapter because it's just a parade of astonishing discoveries about plants. Did you know that:
* Plants that move in response to stimuli, like Venus flytraps and the Mimosa pudica (a.k.a the sensitive plant), are anaesthetized by ether?
* Arabidosis plants react to the sound of caterpillers chewing on their leaves, producing defensive compounds?
* Time-lapse videos of parasitic vines show them twining and 'sniffing' around to find a suitable tree branch?
Another such parasitic vine, the boquila, can shape-shift to a degree, adjusting the shape of their leaves to match the leaves of the tree they're on. It's not clear how they know what shape to take: they will mimic the shape of tree species not native to their South American environment and can also imitate artificial leaves, so it seems like they must be using some form of vision.
Talk of plant responsiveness, or 'intelligence', is tainted by flimsy work in the 1970s that hooked up plants to polygraphs and photographed their auras. The modern work surveyed in this book is therefore pretty cautious, but it presents a growing amount of evidence that plants really are more able to respond to the environment & communicate with each other. I was not expecting to enjoy a book about botany this much!
Today in Labor History March 29, 1797: William Godwin married Mary Wollstonecraft. Godwin was an English journalist, philosopher and novelist. And one of the first modern proponents of anarchism. His most famous books are “An Enquiry Concerning Political Justice” and “Things as They Are; or, The Adventures of Caleb Williams,” a mystery novel that attacks aristocratic privilege. Wollstonecraft was a British writer, philosopher, and advocate of women's rights, and is regarded by many as one of the founding feminist philosophers. Her most famous book was “A Vindication of the Rights of Woman” (1792). She died 11 days after giving birth to her second daughter, Mary Shelley, author of Frankenstein.

I've finished: Carmila by J. Sheridan Le Fanu
I listened to the Audible dramatization, featuring some impressive actors.
Carmila was surprisingly sexy-lesbian for a late 19th century work.
It was interesting to read a pre-Dracula vampire story. The christian elements are more muted and the victim isn't tainted by sin.
PS.
I was introduced to Carmila by the Wizards vx. Lesbians podcast. Though They discussed a different edition.

Just finished "Picks & Shovels" from @pluralistic and really enjoyed the ride, though it didn't end in the way I was expecting, which is always a good thing.
I love the Martin Hench novels, I can feel the old-man nostalgia all through them and I can really relate.
On to another of my too-large "To-Read" list, "The Autobiography of Malcom X."

Please, when linking to books, do not link to Amazon. Find the author's website, or the publisher's website, or some independent bookshop. But don't link to Amazon.
Besides all the other reasons, here's why: When I finally get the cookie banner to close, I am not on the book's page (or any product's page) anymore, but on the front page. It sucks.

The Massacre of Mankind by Stephen Baxter is a true monument to The War of the Worlds, perfectly extending the story into a wider incursion by the Martians. 10/10 from me, it is a book I'm not going to forget.

Rhys. A story of a Druid who gets thrown into time and places (not space!).
See why I wrote this and how it began. And perhaps read the book?
Is there such a thing as liking things too much? Yes, yes there is

Exhausted! My highlight of #supanova #supanovaMelbourne was chatting to a nazgul about my book where a woman wakes up next to a headless body and says, "Oh no. Not again." The nazgul looked at me from behind the dead black of their mask and said, "That's messed up "
