Big Banks Quietly Prepare for Catastrophic Climate Change
#MorganStanley, #JPMorgan and an international banking group have quietly concluded that #ClimateChange will likely exceed the #ParisAgreement's 2 degree goal and are examining how to maintain profits.
The big banks' acknowledgment that the world is likely to fail at preventing warming of more than 2 degrees Celsius above preindustrial levels is spelled out in obscure reports for clients, investors and trade association members. Most were published after the reelection of President Donald Trump, who is seeking to repeal federal policies that support clean energy while turbocharging the production of oil, gas and coal — the main sources of #GlobalWarming.
"We now expect a 3°C world," Morgan Stanley analysts wrote earlier this month, citing "recent setbacks to global decarbonization efforts."
Morgan Stanley’s #climate forecast was tucked into a mundane research report on the future of air conditioning stocks, which it provided to clients on March 17. A 3 degree warming scenario, the analysts determined, could more than double the growth rate of the $235 billion cooling market every year, from 3 percent to 7 percent until 2030.
Nearly a decade has passed since world leaders aimed to limit global warming to 1.5°C.
The good news? We've bent the emissions curve substantially since 2015.

Only One Big Economy Is Aiming for #ParisAgreement's 1.5C Goal
UK is outlier with an increasingly ambitious #climate plan after more than 170 countries miss #UN deadline.
Seven of 10 world's largest economies missed deadline on Monday to submit updated #emissions-cutting plans to United Nations -- and only one, the UK, outlined a strategy for the next decade that keeps pace with expectations staked out under the Paris Agreement.

"Earth is crossing the threshold of 1.5°C of global warming, according to two major global studies which together suggest the planet’s climate has likely entered a frightening new phase.
Under the landmark 2015 Paris Agreement on climate change, humanity is seeking to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and keep planetary heating to no more than 1.5°C above the pre-industrial average. In 2024, temperatures on Earth surpassed that limit.
This was not enough to declare the Paris threshold had been crossed, because the temperature goals under the agreement are measured over several decades, rather than short excursions over the 1.5°C mark.
But the two papers just released use a different measure. Both examined historical climate data to determine whether very hot years in the recent past were a sign that a future, long-term warming threshold would be breached.
The answer, alarmingly, was yes. The researchers say the record-hot 2024 indicates Earth is passing the 1.5°C limit, beyond which scientists predict catastrophic harm to the natural systems that support life on Earth."

@mongabay What a lame excuse. Yes, the US is a complete sh1tshow at the moment, but that doesn't mean that #climatechange is no longer an extremely serious problem. The longer we wait with meaningful climate action, the more expensive and devastating it will be to face the consequences.
Indonesia is considering withdrawing from the Paris Agreement, arguing it is unfair for developing nations to comply when a major polluter like the U.S. has pulled out, again.
Officials highlight Indonesia’s lower per capita emissions and stress the need for more financial aid to transition away from coal.

We, citizens of #Europe, who have become aware of the climate danger at the heart of the sixth extinction that is under way, call on the @EUCommission to set up a #climate assembly leading to a citizens’ #carbon #quota mechanism in each country that will encourage businesses to decarbonise through consumer demand.
The mechanism should cover all purchases of goods and services. It starts symbolically with a critical means of transport, air transport. The Air Quotas information campaign makes it possible to understand the trade mechanism between carbon deficits and surpluses based on a fair distribution that decreases from year to year in line with the #ParisAgreement and the #EuropeanUnion's announcement of a 55% reduction.
The three phases of the climate assembly are a survey, formulation by #citizens selected by lot, together with experts and elected representatives, and finally national referendums for implementation in each country. The initial focus on air transport, leading to a media campaign, could be used as a launchpad (for a short period, however, since it accounts for only 5% of Europe’s carbon footprint).
