This suggests an earlier version of the text where the fountains were 50 metres tall, and that Tolkien *calculated* how many fathoms this was when he switched to an older unit of measurement.</p>

It all started when we were just getting settled in Berlin, fresh off the plane. Priscilla found the listing on a local real estate website. "Wow, look at that, this tower is for sale, and cheap, too," she said. "Where is it?" I asked. "Ortüncberg?" she says, possibly mispronouncing all the vowels, "just outside Hamburg." "Hamburg? Where's that?" I asked. "Uh, somewhere west, I think?" she said, which we both checked on our iPhones.
