Stork still improving the nest. Perhaps the last week of crappy weather has necessitated some repairs. He's nicely cleaning up the birch twigs in front of the house. Get them all!

I'm not sure if there are eggs yet. There should be, but according to the previous folks, last year they did not succeed either.

On 1 March, Bulgarians celebrate the beginning of spring with the tradition of #Marteniza. On this day, friends and family members exchange red and white threads or small dolls known as martenizas. These are worn until the first #Stork or blossoming tree is seen, then they are tied to a #Tree. The red and white colours symbolise health and happiness.

Spending #SolarPunkSunday afternoon in the garden with the cherry blossom, bees and other pollinating insects. Will post links etc when I come in again. Big news for today is that there's a #stork egg in the #webcam nest at #Knepp. The #storks welcomed their new arrival at about 23.42-23.43 yesterday evening. So exciting! whitestorkproject.org/live-cam

White Stork ProjectLive Cam FeedHere is a live camera feed on one of our stork's nests at Knepp Estate!

A maribou stork photographed in Zimbabwe and the scene desaturated in processing. It is sometimes called the "undertaker bird" due to its shape from behind: cloak-like wings and back, skinny white legs, and sometimes a large white mass of "hair". Not to mention its penchant for carrion.

Do you know the legend of the Kindelesbrunnen? The one that tells why storks deposit babies?

This fable was born in Alsace, around 1850. Women who wanted to have a child had to make a wish above a Kinderbrunnen, in other words a "children's well", maintained by a gnome with a white beard. Under the Strasbourg Cathedral there was an underground lake where the souls of children waiting to be born played. Once the wish was made, the gnome took his boat to go and fish out a soul and deposit it on the edge of the well.

This is where our stork arrived and with its powerful beak, it deposited the baby in a basket before carrying it to its cradle.

If the fable was born in Alsace, it is because for a long time, it was the only region where storks were found. In large numbers. Almost every rural village had its nest, which was not the case in the rest of France, where the species was absent or extremely rare.

In Croatia, we are lucky: there are many storks. The White one of course but also the Black one, very threatened and endangered in France.
