Phew, even pro astronomers get photobombed sometimes 😄

Sam Lawler @sundogplanets tells me the story how she pointed her telescope 🔭 at the Kuiper Belt, just to have Saturn 🪐 crash the party with massive overexposure. In the end, this accident helped discover 128 new Saturn moons.

Maybe I shouldn’t delete my bad photos after all?

Was having kind of an out of sorts morning and then I went to the post office and all my seeds had come.

While i was on my way into the post office I put my hand in the pocket of my raincoat and found some beautiful little bumblebee earrings in my pocket that I bought last year at Pride and completely forgot about. It was such a surprise.

So I got home and planted some heirloom sweet peas from the 1600s that are supposed to be the nicest smelling variety of sweet pea on earth. I didn't even mind that it was pouring with rain while i did.

Feeling like a rather serendipitous day. Gardening is hope.

"Some of that basic research looked pretty weird or obscure or even useless at the start. RNA interference, a tool used to create marketed drugs. started out when people had trouble explaining the colors of petunia flowers. I'm sure Elon would have had a good time making fun of these morons wasting public money, trying to figure out why the petunia flowers turned out different than expected. But you never know where this stuff is coming from."

You know what's crazy?

I was just about posting the following video here on Fedi when I stumbled upon your thread.

convenience culture killed #serendipity (it's BAD):

In the video the YT creator Kate Cassidy talks about this exact topic and I immediately thought about Goodhart's law as well!

Glad that there are still sane people in this world. ❤️

kate cassidy | Invidiousconvenience culture killed serendipity (it's BAD)We (the tech industry) are optimizing the fun out of life—and I feel like we don’t even realize it. We’ve built a culture obsessed with convenience, efficiency, and optimization—but in the process, we’re losing serendipity, spontaneity, and the magic of the unexpected. From dating apps to algorithmic feeds, one-click shopping to AI decision-making, technology keeps making things “easier"... but is easier always better?🤔 I wanted to dig into why *convenience culture* is actually making our lives worse, how tech is stripping away the best parts of human experience, and why not everything should be frictionless. Are we losing something important in the name of optimization? Chance / Chloe

So, I said we'd come back to Chloe and here we are. I met Chloe (and Joey) when I took their pictures under the giant flamingo sculpture in Chicago. Chloe is a multi-talented performer who lives in LA but was visiting Chicago, where she grew up. (How do I know they're a multi-talented performer? Let's call that #foreshadowing...)

The same week, I took a trip up to the NY Renaissance Festival and CHLOE WAS PERFORMING THERE. It's the sort of thing that somebody might ask "What are the chances (of meeting an LA-based actor in Chicago and running into them in upstate NY in the same week)?" but, anecdotally, I know the answer is 100%.
