Today is Document Freedom Day. We celebrate developments that support open standards and open formats.
Our contribution: repositories for open and FAIR data storage, workshops for FAIR research data management. And an open source laboratory journal "Chemotion ELN", which is specially programmed for the needs of chemists and supports the creation of open data.

We would like to congratulate the Rat für Informationsinfrastrukturen (#RfII) on its 10th anniversary! 🎉 🎂 Yesterday, this special birthday was celebrated in Berlin.

ℹ️ The history of #NFDI began with the RfII: In 2016, the Council formulated the need for a coordinated research data infrastructure for Germany. The recommendation paper ‘Performance from Diversity’ ("Leistung aus Vielfalt") can be regarded as the conceptual birth of NFDI.

File format building blocks: primitives in digital preservation

by @beet_keeper

A primitive in software development can be described as:

a fundamental data type or code that can be used to build more complex software programs or interfaces.

– via capterra.com/glossary/primitiv (also Wiki: language primitives)

Like bricks and mortar in the building industry, or oil and acrylic for a painter, a primitive helps a software developer to create increasingly more complex software, from your shell scripts, to entire digital preservation systems.

Primitives also help us to create file formats, as we’ve seen with the Eyeglass example I have presented previously, the file format is at its most fundamental level a representation of a data structure as a binary stream, that can be read out of the data structure onto disk, and likewise from disk to a data structure from code.

For the file format developer we have at our disposal all of the primitives that the software developer has, and like them, we also have “file formats” (as we tend to understand them in digital preservation terms) that serve as our primitives as well.

Our german podcast episode is out!
We are part of the NFDI Podcast episodes on strengthening research data and software competencies (episodes 6,7,8).

The Ministry of Higher Education and Research (MESR) publishes the results of the French Open Science Monitor for 2024. This year, for the first time, the monitor introduces the monitoring of the adoption of open science policies by institutions.

Hot off the presses: 🔥

The Dutch Research Council (NWO) published a report about mentions and citations of #ResearchData and #ResearchSoftware in publications funded by them. This is more or less a mandatory requirement for many years already.

Depending on how optimistic you want to be, the results are either 1) an improvement over time and decent compared to other countries or 2) very far from what we want to see.

NWOSharing research data and software: how are NWO and ZonMw funded projects doing? | NWOResearch data and software resulting from NWO and ZonMw funding should be shared as openly as possible. But to what extent does this actually happen? A report published today sheds light, for the first time, on compliance with the research data management policy.

Trump's new administration is putting at risk several main #researchdata databases on Americans' health. According to the Atlantic, these databases could be altered by operations meant to systematically replace "forbidden terms" such as "gender" (and a term list related to LGBTQI+ persons) by authorized words such as sex. theatlantic.com/health/archive see also here journalistsresource.org/home/r #HealtData

I'm once again asking people, especially those who host their research data and/or work on US-servers or with US-based services:
Please backup your data on repositories, mirror your repos and save copies!

One quick and reliable way: zenodo.org

My point is: We need to act quickly.
Yes, pay @Codeberg et al., but that shouldn't paralyze you to act.

Did you know that we tour the various faculties at our #university with a Pop-up #Library?

Next up: our Faculty of #Science and #Engineering on 5 December.

We welcome all #academic staff of this faculty to visit our Pop-up Library and meet our experts for #openaccess publishing, open educational resources, research data management, and systematic reviews.

And, of course, to ask all your library-related questions 📚
