A painting I initially sketched out on Wednesday, returning to finish it this morning.
The ruins of the 12th century 'Hospital of St John the Baptist' in High Wycombe. The hospital closed under the Dissolution of the Monasteries in the mid 16th century. It became a school in 1550 with a royal charter. Also known as the Royal Grammar School.
Oil on gesso panel, 28 x 36 cm.

I joined a local Urban Sketchers group yesterday and after living so long in a place where there was none, it was so nice and refreshing to meet likeminded creative people.

Can't wait for the next meetup...

Also as you can see I chose some very nice urban architecture as a subject with lots of colorful trash cans. It was a blast! (Kind of accidentally inspired others to paint them too. ooops)

I think I was supposed to paint a portrait today, but I woke up too late to make it to my portrait group :(. Oh well, I’m not really flooded with cash right now so I made a pleinair painting. The outside doesn’t ask for model money :D. Anyways, I passed by this construction site the other day and though that wanted to paint that. The workers were very nice, too.

Watercolor plein air - 2/9/2025

Part of the Tlacuache mountain range outside of Oaxaca City.

I'm a slow learner...I never quite got what plein air painters meant when they described the process as "fresh" or "capturing the light". I'm starting to get it I think.

(22 x 7 in, 55 x 18 cm - Painted across the two page spread of a sketchbook.)

Watercolor wave studies (plein air) 1/24/2025

Painting waves in watercolor is tricky business, unless you resort to gouache, you need to plan how to preserve the white of the paper for the foam of the breaking waves. Plus on location, there's that part about waves not standing still for you, lol.

For the next ones, I'm going to darken the shadows right under the breaking part even more, in order to heighten the contrast.
