Continued thread

The very idea a #developers performance should be judged by how much they use #AI is quite foolish.

What happens when it's time for performance reviews and you find that someone who isn't using AI as much is closing more tickets than someone who is? Using AI well is not a skill that one hones and gets better at over time. You'll always be limited by the abilities of the model.

If developers start getting judged by how many AI suggestions they accept or reject, the inevitable result is just shittier software. And shittier software is bad for everyone, but mostly the companies whose codebases will probably be irreparably damaged.

If I was a smart developer, I'd start keeping track of all companies pushing #GenAI hard on their developers and start working on alternatives for when they inevitably shit the bed and lose their users' trust.

I think #AI usage mandates in companies are a bit misguided and if I was a conspiracy theorist I'd think more was afoot than just "increasing developer productivity".

It reminds me of a certain episode of #hbosiliconvalley (which I still think is the best show ever made about the tech industry), when the head of Pied Piper's biggest investor, Raviga, instructed Richard to give Eklow (an AI company) free compute on their network because they had blown through their $112m investment. It was essentially a threat - do this, or risk making your biggest investor unhappy.

This is obviously not researched or anything, but I can imagine a situation where some investors out there who have poured millions into #genai companies start to realise that they might not get as much ROI as they expected. In that scenario, they'd turn to other companies in their portfolios, and instruct those at the top that they need to drive AI adoption by essentially forcing it on their employees.

“[#GenAI] has been an overwhelmingly negative and demoralizing force in my own personal workplace, no question about it.”

Luke Plunkett:

“I spoke with people working in the video game industry or very close to it, including artists, game designers, and software developers. I asked them to tell their stories about their daily interactions and struggles with artificial intelligence in the workplace, and what it means for the jobs they've been trained and hired to do.”
