A broad old tree trunk has lost its bark. The bare wood is deeply stained with moss, and several pale mushrooms with thin stalks are sprouting out from the surface into the sunshine.

Tale of two morels, one real and the other false. I finally found a black morel (Morchella angusticeps) in my woods, which is later than normal. And on the same day I found a Giant's False Morel (Maublancomyces gigas). I’m not sure if it’s unstable temperatures or maybe a residual effect of last summer’s drought, but the morels are starting slowly here this year. I’m hoping things will pick up in time for the blonds, which generally are my best producers. #FungiFriday #mushrooms #athensoh

A few alternative mushroom pics from the last month.

* Three Barometer Earthstars [Astraeus hygrometricus] forming a ladder up a mossy embankment.

* A small clump of bright orange Cinnabar Polypores [Pycnoporus cinnabarinus] that were either chomped or grew in with an odd shape.

* A moss covered branch with several glossy yellow Witches Butter [Tremella mesenterica] jelly mushrooms.

Three mushrooms are growing on a steep embankment, almost in a straight line. The top one is tucked into a little crevice between a flat rock and the base of the trunk. The bottom two are growing out of the side of the embankment at nearly a 90° angles, so that the tops are pointed directly at the camera. All 3 mushrooms look like creamy sacs atop dark grey and white star shaped starlike petals. The patterns are cracked looking.

Closeup of a bright cinnamon orange mushroom that spears to have been stunted somehow. There are three growths pointed north, east, and west with their inner parts joined. Each growth resembles a blob rather than any usual mushroom shape. They are growing on a damp birch branch that has fallen and also has green moss on it.

Looking straight down at a damp branch that is nearly entirely covered with green moss. Jutting out of the branch are 10 bright yellow fan shaped portions that look more like jelly candies than mushrooms.

A little bouquet of pixie cups (𝘊𝘭𝘢𝘥𝘰𝘯𝘪𝘢 sp.) amidst some moss, from the Wiley Trails:

A bouquet of very pale colored lichen, with several trumpet-shaped cups projecting upwards from a foliose base. The cups look like they're dusted with the same pale color, like Shake 'n Bake trumpets. The little patch of lichen sits amidst a carpet of mossy green tufts.

A jagged tree stump that appears petrified, glossy and glassy rather than dry or splintery. Polypore fungi are growing out of a few of its crevices, and they resemble toasted marshmallows with caramel sauce.

Tucked away in its little cave of stone and moss.

Barometer Earthstar [Astraeus hygrometricus]

A strange looking mushroom sits tucked into a little overhang of moss covered rocks. The mushroom resembles an oval, pitted, dirty white, sac atop what appear to be flower petals, but are the starlike bottom of the mushroom. These “petals” are light gray with erratic dark brown lines. It looks like managed art rather than something you’d find in nature.

For #FungiFriday I present these interesting #mushrooms I encountered in Jennings, #Louisiana earlier this week. I believe they are Fringed Sawgills (Lentinus crinitus). At least the top of their caps have the scaly appearance that this species is known for…

A closeup of the ground with grass and a few honeysuckle leaves attached to a vine. There are numerous dark brown mushrooms of various sizes with hairy-appearing caps. The center of these caps are darker brown than the edges.

Another close up of the ground with grass present, in this case there is a small piece of wood with several brown mushrooms sprouting from it. These are lighter brown than in the previous picture, but also have the scaly brown caps seen previously.
