NASA's Parker Solar Probe captured a time-lapse from inside #Mercury's orbit, showing coronal streamers, a Coronal Mass Ejection, and #planets like Mercury and #Venus. Between #Earth and #Mars, #Comet Tempel 1 appears. The video also shows high-energy solar particles. This data helps us understand space weather impacts on Earth.

In my off season this past fall, I decided to go to Kauai and go backpacking all over the island. Coming from Alaska it was quite pleasant to wear shorts constantly and have good fresh fruit everywhere you went. While I was camping on the west side of the island I decided to pull the camera out and get some Milky Way shots. What I totally forgot about was the #comet C/2023 A3 passing by our planet.

The hooting and hollering that I made when I first looked at the image could be heard for miles.

The upper part of the cloud is lit up from the moon rising behind the island creating a very pleasing image.
I am shooting this on a #sony A7iii with a 20mm f1.8 lens. 30” exposure, iso 1250

#Comet G3 ATLAS Setting over a Chilean Hill

Comet C/2024 G3 (ATLAS) appeared to set over a hill in a time-lapse video due to #Earth's rotation, captured from Chile. Once bright in the Southern Hemisphere, it disintegrated near the Sun. Its debris continues along its orbital path.

Since you loved the images of #comet C/2024 G3 (ATLAS) that we shared recently, here are some more, taken from our Paranal Observatory in #Chile. This lovely #BlackAndWhite image was taken by our colleague Juan Beltrán, an engineer at Paranal.

This black and white picture shows a small telescope and a large portion of the night sky. At the forefront, the silhouette of a small telescope reveals its small dome and central structure. Besides it stands a man, wearing a hood. The background of the picture shows the night sky, although only a few stars are visible, as well as a few short white strikes which indicate moving objects. The ’star’ of this composition, though, is the comet C/2024 G3 (ATLAS), which covers most of the frame and looks like a giant feather in the sky (or a bushy cat’s tail). The core of the comet (its tip) is bright white, while its tail becomes more diffuse as you go away from the core.

Comet C/2024 G3 (ATLAS) gleams against the January sky above three NOIRLab-supported telescopes in this Image of the Week. This is the first time that humans have observed this comet, which was last visible from Earth about 600,000 years ago. At perihelion, this comet reached an apparent magnitude of -3.8. This is about the same brightness as Venus, on the right side of the image, and potentially makes it the brightest comet of 2025. The straight lines across the sky are satellites, more prominently visible in this close-up. This image was taken atop Cerro Pachón, in the foothills of the Chilean Andes, next to the Southern Astrophysical Research Telescope (SOAR), a part of the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory (CTIO), a Program of NSF NOIRLab. In the distance are two other observatories supported by NSF NOIRLab (left to right): Gemini South, one half of the International Gemini Observatory, funded in part by the NSF and operated by NSF NOIRLab, and the upcoming NSF–DOE Vera C.
