Unicorn by Don Paterson after Rilke’s “Die Sonette an Orpheus” This is the animal that never was. Not knowing that, they loved it anyway: its bearing, its stride, its high, clear whinny- right down to the still light of its gaze. It never was. And yet such was their love the pure beast arose; they had cleared the space. And in the stable of its nothingness it shook its white mane out and stamped its hoof. They fed it, then, not with hay or corn, but with the chance that it might come to pass. All this gave the creature such a power its brow put out a horn; one single horn. It grew inside a maiden’s looking-glass then one day walked out, and passed into her.

One thing I am struggling with in my translations of 19th century German folk tale is how to translate the pronouns for a child of indeterminate gender.

In Germany, "Kind" is a "neutral" word, and the usual pronoun is "es" - the counterpart of the English "it". But I am not sure if "it" is the proper pronoun to use in this context.

So what is appropriate here? Note that I am talking about texts where there is _no_ other clue to the child's gender!

If you are a fountain pen fan and wish you had a way to use up more ink to justify buying even more ink, might I suggest handwriting the first draft of a four-volume 19th century memoir translation from French to English? I am on volume four and have flown through ink over the past couple of years. And bought more. 😁
