The FSFE has actively engaged in a coalition of organisations urging the authority to prioritize consumer protection and the rights of end-users to use their own routers/modems in fiber networks

Together with @annabonnie and @lexelas from @fsfe we dive into what is necessary in terms of social movement to make changes for digital rights. We took #RouterFreedom as example of a side struggle for #NetNeutrality and what are the costs in terms of engagement and resources to make a change in favor of consumer choice.

Good news for #RouterFreedom and #NetNeutrality

The Italian regulator AGCOM has opened a consultation on the determination of the location of the termination point. This will define whether end-users can use their own routers and modems to connect to the internet.

#RouterFreedom is the longest policy/legal project I have been working so far. While the @fsfe started in Germany way back in 2013, I joined later the party in Feb. 2019 to cover the efforts at EU level after the 2018 reform of EU telecommunications law.

Having Router Freedom confirmed after almost 6 years in Germany is a great achievement, also in a personal level. I am very grateful to a LOT of people helping us with technical, legal, policy and community management advises. The effort paid off!

In special a big shout out to @mxmehl, @lexelas and @kirschner who have been great fellows in this path.

Now we look to a broader picture. #DeviceNeutrality, #DMA, #satellite networks are posing new challenges for #NetNeutrality and the right of end-users to choose their own equipment for internet connection.

Router Freedom in Germany: A victory for consumers!

The German regulator BNetzA has confirmed #RouterFreedom in the country.

We have been pushing for this since 2013 and will continue to monitor implementation and compliance!

Why is #RouterFreedom important?

If your router is not free, your digital freedom is likely to be compromised!

Router freedom is the principle that people are free to choose and use their own private devices to connect to the internet.

The situation with #RouterFreedom in Italy demonstrates that certification procedures involving internet access devices can negatively affect end-users. TIM's is charging at least 50k euro for allowing other operators to use their fiber modems (ONT) on TIM networks. This translates in less freedom of choice for consumers.

Exceptions against #RouterFreedom undermine users’ rights in Italy

We urge Italy's telecom regulator, AGCOM, to remove these restrictions and fully restore users' rights to choose their own equipment to connect to fiber networks: https://fsfe.org/news/2024/news-20241016-01.html

A Belgian court has upheld the decision of the country’s regulator to introduce #RouterFreedom for fiber networks.

The objections, raised by a local internet service provider, were deemed unfounded.

This decision represents a significant victory for consumer rights, and we urge other national regulators to follow this example.
