I'm listening to an RNZ report on the Levin tornado;

A mention of the Mayor going door-to-door to check on residents, got me thinking about how the council is tracking whether households have or haven't been visited. Could OSM map data and software be used?

A software package that made this easier would be useful in a wide range of situations. Any organising body in a natural disaster, or any political party canvassing voters, for a start.

RNZ · Tornado causes damage in LevinParts of Levin have suffered extensive damage from a tornado which brought down trees, smashed windows and lifted roofs on Tuesday morning. Reporter Jimmy Ellingham spoke to Charlotte Cook.

Most depressing podcast episode ever. According to the results of the latest Reid Research Poll (now funded by RNZ), after watching the Coalition of Chaos screw up over and over again for half a term, half the country seems to think they deserve a second one;

It's like trying to get a friend to leave their abusive partner. A bouquet of economic green shoots and a promise things will get better, and months of beatings are forgotten.

"... since about 2018, core media ad spend as a proportion of GDP has been below 0.8%. So literally never - going back all the way to the 60s - has ad spending been a smaller proportion of economic activity ... when we hear all of these conversations about how the media should be funded into the future, ad spending doesn't appear to be as viable of a long term solution ..."

With the Free Speech Onion wading in to support the attempted far right takeover of NZME, it seems it might be at least partially a revenge action against the NZHerald decision not to accept political ads from Hobson's Pledge. Ads their editors considered to be misinformation;

Revealed: Exactly how many hours New Zealanders wait on hold each year

<<A new customer service report has found New Zealanders collectively spent 24 million hours on hold last year.>>

<<The worst offenders were those in financial services, such as banks and insurance. As well as government, with wait time increasing 30 minutes year-on-year.>>

Heidelberg. Am Morgen des 15. Februar 1934 betraten Emilie und ihre Mutter das städtische Amtsgericht in der Seminarstraße in der Altstadt. Dort befand sich das Erbgesundheitsgericht, vor dem Emilie auf Antrag des Bezirksarztes erscheinen musste. Der Arzt vertrat die Auffassung, dass die junge Frau wegen ihrer Taubheit als "erbkrank" gelte. Grundlage war das von den Nationalsozialisten eingeführte "Gesetz zur Verhütung erbkranken Nachwuchses". In diesen Fällen sah der NS-Staat die Sterilisation der betreffenden Person vor... I just noticed that my friend Pounamu was interviewed for Mapuna on RNZ last year;

rnz.co.nz/podcast/mapuna-podca

The interview was published on 30 November, just after the Hīkoi mō te Tiriti arrived at Parliament. One of the things Pounamu talks about is staying in a space of manaakitanga when we have difficult intercultural conversations, like the one about whether or not rangatira ceded sovereignty to the Crown when they signed.

Having already been exposed by Jack Tame on Q&A as a quote bot programmed with talking points, our Prime Minister was similarly exposed as mealy-mouthed in a normally friendly interview with Nat-aligned shock jock Mike Hosking;

"You've made a complete meal of this."

This is *not* a good sign for the government.

Tama Potaka for Nat leader! I'm serious. You can tell from the careful way he speaks that he doesn't approve of the cocktail government Mr Potatohead has mixed up. But he's responsible and loyal enough to keep his kōrero away from any explicit criticism of his party leader, or the coalition he's part of;

I think he could be a fantastic leader for a new generation of progressive Nats.

"Linton [Kwesi Johnson] was very adamant that [Blair Peach] should be remembered by our community, because he lost his life in the struggle for ... racial equality. And he wasn't even British. He was a schoolteacher that came from New Zealand to teach young kids at school, and then a policeman hit him in the head on this march, and killed him ... It was despicable"
