In climate change news, the 2025 Bloomberg Energy Transition Investment Trends report was just released; I love these reports because they cut through bullshit and document the honest signal of how much money is actually being invested in ensuring civilization remains viable on this planet.
There is reason to be optimistic, like how 2024 was the first year that investment in the energy transition surpassed $2 trillion. Unfortunately, hitting net zero by 2050 requires a tripling of current spending (not eventually - right now, with reasonable annual increases thereafter).
As in past years, it cannot be denied that China is the only country coming close to treating this issue with the seriousness it deserves, investing nearly as much as all other countries combined and at a far higher percentage of GDP (4.5%) than others (for example, EU-27 is at 2%). Despite this, even this level of effort (if adopted globally) might not be enough.
