The Devil On All Fours:

(Oral tale, from Dönberg)

A man was so sick that he was dying. A devout neighbor visited him, recognized the danger, and asked him to save his soul via devout prayer. The sick man replied: “I cannot pray, for a large, black man lies over there in front of my bed. And he threatens me terribly even when I merely fold my hands!”

Then the visitor took hold of the hand of the sick man and prompted him to pray now. Then he was able to do so. When the neighbor asked him after a while if it was now easier to do so, he replied: “Yes, the black man crawls away further and further. Soon he is at the door, and then I shall have peace.”

Why Crakow Shoes fell out of Fashion:

At the end of the 15th century, Prussia was very fond of high fashions. Crakow, or “beaked” shoes with very long tips were especially popular. One had a tip with a length of one finger, another one with a length of a span, the tip of the third one was half an ell long, and so forth, however they pleased.

At the time, at Marienburg, the son of the Hauptmann was possessed by the Devil. And when the Devil was banished at the gate in front of the image of the Virgin Mary, he said that he would be happy to leave, as long as it was permitted to him to hide in the beaks of the shoes. Then those beaks were removed entirely, for from that moment on no one wanted to wear shoes with pointed tips.

The Devil Summoners at Königsberg:

During the time of Grand Master Hans von Tiefen, twelve men conspired with each other to lament their poverty to the Devil. By coincidence, they were all named Johannes, and the Devil will supposedly not fetch such people. They went to the Glappenberg mountain, which is now called the Rollberg. There, they sat down in a closed circle and made their summons, beseeching him that he should show them where hidden treasures could be found and bring them 13 shillings so that they could lift them. However, he appeared to them in different forms for three hours, and every time he talked to them, he did so in strange languages. Finally, four of them fell down and died, four of them became maddened, and four of them ran away and pledged themselves to St. Jacob.

The Poor Soul:

The people of Rothenburg never thought much of the Devil, since he once was tricked by an elderly woman. But when he had finally found his way there and noticed this contempt, he wanted to show off his power in an unmistakable manner. When once a farmer drove on the Thorweg alley beneath the main church on the Holy Day, and swore in an abominable manner at the same time, the Evil One soared out of the small door in the Thorweg and threw the man high up against the wall. The corpse fell down again, but the poor soul remained stuck at the wall, where it is still visible to this day. It appears brown, offset with black spots.
