Attractive Nuisance

Here's the 20" #CorsiRosenthalBox I'm working on. Fans in rectangular housings basically don't exist in the UK, so I made a cardboard shim out of the box for this circular one.

This build was a proof of concept (hence the green masking tape rather than duct tape, and the plastic sheeting still on the #MERV13 filter boards). I was testing whether the shim and the boards would support the weight of the fan. Despite being a mock up it's surprisingly rigid!

Next stage involves building it properly (including sealing those gaps at the corners; the 20" fan is actually more like 21.5" across and the boards are 19.5"), then using my anemometer to measure the flow rate of the finished box, so I can work out what size room it can filter. I'm intending this one for a local community centre where a Queer Club meets, to make their meetings safer.

A partially constructed Corsi-Rosenthal Box. This is a cube, around 20 inches per side. The bottom is just cardboard. The top is a round black plastic fan, mounted in a hole in the middle of another piece of cardboard, and held there with black duct tape. The four sides are filter boards - cardboard frames containing cloth like filter material. The boards are attached to the top and bottom with green masking tape. There are gaps at the corners because the boards are smaller than the fan's diameter.

Here's my contribution to the #CorsiRosenthalBox scene.

It's not strictly the 20" box fan design, but I figure it still counts. I had an old window-mount fan that was begging to be repurposed.

Took a bit longer to design and build than I'd like, but I hope my sinuses appreciate the effort. :blobcatheart:

Also, this is my regular reminder that duct tape is pure magic!

A Corsi-Rosenthal-like box sits on a dresser. The white window mount dual-fan unit sits atop a rectangular box in matching size with commodity furnace-style air filters on two of the long sides. Only one filter can be seen from this angle though. Duct tape permeates the design.
The same Corsi-Rosenthal-like box is pictured again, but without the filters attached. You can see the frame structure inside the box which is made out of cardboard struts and, again, lots of duct tape.

Air filter cleaning day at the observatory! I highly recommend CR boxes (see cleanaircrew.org/box-fan-filte), I made several and even the easy filter+fan are so good. Clean air circulation helps seeing, mirror longevity, and humans. Of course if you have actual scope filters don't forget those too 🙂

Today, I was asked about effective air cleaners, because wildfires have already begun to flare in North America.

Extensive global testing has found that a DIY #CorsiRosenthalBox will outperform almost every commercial HEPA unit while costing less to run.

For the US & Canada, the best source of filters to build one is Costco: Filtrete 1900, 2200, or 2500 models with at least one 20-inch dimension.

These units also help mitigate allergens and infectious aerosols like #Covid and Influenza.

taking @robwiss 's build with IKEA filters (github.com/robwiss/diy_air_pur) as inspiration, I built this. All the filters on one side of the box so I can hang this above my sofa. This cardboard monstrosity is a prototype to show my partner that it works and I'll re-build it out of PVC boards soon. But! cardboard is an easy to work with material. And it is more easily available and cheaper than some other materials.
Edit: I sourced mine from the recycling bin.
