Before GPUs ruled the world, a different kind of digital wizardry existed. Demoscene coders would push the limits of text-mode graphics to animate 3D tunnels, particle effects, and music sync. All using ASCII characters in a terminal. These demos ran on minimal hardware, often in just a few kilobytes. It wasn’t about photorealism, it was about creativity, constraint, and raw code skill. Some of these still hold up today, reminding us that flashy doesn’t always mean better.

Fourty years ago in April two friends and me were giving the first training for a programming class of the local community college. The computers where PC clones, Olivetti M24 with 512 KByte of RAM, a 4 MHz 8086 and floppy drives. Fond memories.
