@kevinrothrock

I hate to break it to you, but we have stuff like #InternationalLaw now, under which the acquisition of territory by using force resp. a situation created by the aggression must not be recognized as lawful (voelkerrechtsblog.org/statemen justsecurity.org/80454/stateme )

I hate to break it to you, but #Crimea has been transferred to #Ukraine (then UkrSSR) *without* an armed conflict.

I hate to break it to you, but #russia has - under #putin (!) - recognized its border with Ukraine in a f🤬🤬in' treaty (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Treaty_o).
__________

Or ironically spoken: Hey, everybody! It's okay to change borders by force again, because - as Kevin Rothrock said - that is how most borders were determined in the past. So that makes it okay today. Wohoo! Go CriminalsOfAggression!

voelkerrechtsblog.orgStatement of Hungarian International Lawyers against the Blatant Disregard for International Law
Continued thread

András Lederer from #Hungary's oldest & largest #HumanRights group, the Hungarian Helsinki Cmte, told NPR that the #State Dept's new policy weakens the position of human rights defenders in countries that have a problematic track record on these issues.

"You're removing pressure, & it definitely sends the message to the perpetrators that this is not important for [the US] anymore," Lederer said.

By #law, the #State Dept releases annual reports for every country, & they traditionally follow one basic outline. The cuts ordered in the #Trump admin memo are not targeted at specific countries. Rather, they eliminate entire categories of #abuses from all the reports.

But some deletions are more noteworthy than others. The Trump admin recently negotiated the transfer of #immigrants from the #US into #ElSalvador's notorious #prison system.

NPR confirmed the memo's authenticity w/2 sources close to the process.

The reports, released in March or April most years, are highly anticipated by foreign leaders & diplomats w/ a stake in how their countries are portrayed. The 2024 reports were initially completed in January, before #Trump took office, but they've been re-edited by the new admin. #State Dept sources say the revised versions won't be released until May.

Continued thread

Officially called "Country Reports on #HumanRights Practices," the annual documents are required, by statute, to be a "full & complete report regarding the status of internationally recognized human rights."

Human rights defenders say the cuts amount to an American retreat from its position as the world's human rights watchdog.

#TerrorState

The #State Dept is changing its mind about #HumanRights

The #Trump admin is substantially scaling back the State Dept's annual reports on international human rights to REMOVE longstanding critiques of #abuses such as harsh #prison conditions, govt #corruption & restrictions on participation in the political process, NPR learned.
