Court rules federal government cannot freeze #Maine's funding from #USDA

by WGME StaffFri, April 11th 2025 at 8:46 PM

"A court says the federal government cannot freeze Maine’s funding from the Department of Agriculture.

"This comes after the USDA announced it was freezing Maine’s funding when the state would not comply with federal #TitleIX interpretations.

"Under this new ruling, the court is granting Maine a temporary restraining order, saying the federal government must unfreeze and release federal Department of Agriculture funding back to Maine.

"That includes money for things like #SchoolNutrition and #FoodBank programs.

"The Trump administration cannot freeze or withhold funding while this restraining order is in place, and the two sides will have to meet in court, though a date has not been set.

"Maine Attorney General #AaronFrey says this temporary restraining order confirms the Trump administration did not follow the rule of law when it cut program funds that go to feed school children and vulnerable adults.

" 'This order preserves Maine’s access to certain congressionally appropriated funds by prohibiting an unlawful freeze by the administration,' Frey said. “No one in our constitutional republic is above the law, and we will continue to fight to hold this administration to account.' "

#Maine takes #Trump administration to court in first lawsuit over #TitleIX dispute

The lawsuit, filed Monday by Attorney General Aaron Frey, challenges the U.S. Department of Agriculture's decision to halt federal funds over Maine's policy regarding #TransgenderAthletes.

April 7, 2025

"Maine Attorney General Aaron Frey filed a federal lawsuit against the Trump administration Monday challenging the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s decision to withhold federal funds over Maine’s policy allowing transgender athletes to compete in girls high school sports.
Frey’s office said funds withheld by the administration are used to feed children in schools, child care centers and after-school programming, as well as disabled adults in congregate settings.

"It is the first lawsuit to result from the Trump administration’s actions targeting Maine over trans athletes.

"'Under the banner of keeping children safe, the Trump administration is illegally withholding grant funds that go to keeping children fed,' Frey said in a written statement. 'This is just another example where no law or consequence appears to restrain the administration as it seeks capitulation to its lawlessness. The President and his cabinet secretaries do not make the law and they are not above the law, and this action is necessary to remind the President that Maine will not be bullied into violating the law.'"

CounterPunch.org · Bertrand Russell: Redefining the Public Intellectual in an Era of Rising AuthoritarianismWithin days of his return to office, President Donald Trump unleashed a chilling display of authoritarianism, providing a stark reminder of the specter haunting the United States: the specter of fascism. As reported in the New York Times, his actions underscored a vision of governance steeped in cruelty and unchecked power.  With the stroke of a pen, Trump pardoned 1,500 individuals involved in the January 6th insurrection, dismantled environmental protections, opened Alaska’s wilderness to expanded oil and gas drilling, terminated Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programs across federal agencies, and signed an executive order ending birthright citizenship.

As a #USU #Alumnus, I am again called on to denounce my university.

No, it's not about a coach saying raped students lie or a series of cases where USU failed to follow #TitleIX. This time it's about the whole of Cache Valley being told to attack a person living on campus because she dared to take an RA job.

I lived in Merrill Hall. I remember how accessible the units are. I remember repeatedly having to lock our front door because my roommates had just popped out for a minute and there was a guy going around trying the locks in the all women residential hall.

I am furious and embarrassed that USU, Utah legislators, and the weirdo ex-cop who's made a living on LGBT hate and antimasking in a pandemic.

Maybe focus on your actual threats to safety, USU. You know, your unending rapes and domestic/intimate partner violence on and off-campus. Not a young woman just trying to live her life and not harming anyone.

ETA: For the curious outside of Utah, this is a good summary of the situation at USU. (Note, it's the cis, straight guys, USU!)
