I'm so good at buying stuff for my #homelab and so bad at actually placing that in service. The list of stuff in waiting:

1. Backup #NAS box - waiting for OMV installation and disk transplantation from old #Synology
2. #tplink AX5400 access point - waiting for VLAN configuration on switch
3. Two small #bitcoin miners - waiting for VLAN-based VPN routing
4. New 2 TB NVME drive for my primary PC - waiting for a solid idea on how to move #Fedora from current 1 TB drive without re-installation

TIL/PSA: you can set a #Synology NAS' external LEDs' brightness /on a schedule/ now! No more manually remembering to fuss with it when somebody's sleeping in my home office / den / guest room. LEDs are just off from 00:00-08:00.

I just bought a lifetime #plex pass, after trying it for 6 months or so. I only use it for #plexamp to stream #music #flac from my #synology #nas to my #linux laptop, #rpi with #allo #boss2 #dac and #android phone. I also created an account for my almost 80-year-old father so he can join my server and library.

I came from #roon which I enjoyed a lot, but due to different reasons I made the switch. Plexamp provides such a seamless experience, I really can't wish for more. Keep up the good work!

Getting family members onboard with new technology can always be a bit hit or miss.

But setting up a #Synology server and using Synology Drive over Tailscale for all of our document management has been a big win. No more private docs on a megacorp cloud. And all our devices have access to it from anywhere, even though the server has no public facing IPs.

OK, #tailscale works together with #pihole , I'm very happy. It is also installed on my #synology #NAS

Next step: disable all Synology-related #portforwarding on my #router (especially 5000, 5001 and 6690 for Synology Drive).

I can't understand how to use my #DSM without those ports being forwarded. Do I need to autorise them somewhere? How does it work in conjunction with #QuickConnect or synology.me ?

Amazing that it took them this long. The new product lineup from #Synology for this year only accepts Synology branded drives.

If you happen to own an older Synology and are looking to replace: consider moving towards a more standardized platform. Like the Zimacube. Or if you are feeling a bit more adventurous: build your own.

Don't switch to #QNAP, #Asustor or whatever - they'll be the next brand to enshittify after Synology.

There is some fantastic and open software available. I personally prefer #HardenedBSD with #ZFS - but there is so much more!

Does anyone have a good #NAS vendor recommendation?

Being able to offsite a backup with a friend is probably the most important feature for my requirements.

#Synology seems to be the best option, but based on some reading, I’m worried about their software eventually being put behind a subscription.

Any suggestions are welcome!
