The European Union’s border protection agency on Tuesday said it is investigating multiple alleged human rights violations by Greece in dealing with illegal immigration.

The agency, Frontex, said it is reviewing 12 alleged serious incidents that mostly took place in 2024. It gave no details.
Frontex spokesperson Chris Borowski told The Associated Press the agency recently boosted its complaint mechanism.
There was no immediate government response.
Greece has come under increased international scrutiny and criticism from human rights groups following a migrant boat sinking in 2023 off its southern coast that killed hundreds.
In a January ruling, the European Court of Human Rights described Greece’s use of summary expulsions of migrants, or “pushbacks,” as being systematic.

Το αρμόδιο υπουργείο αρνήθηκε πως η κατάσταση των παιδιών οφείλεται σε υποσιτισμό και κάνει λόγο για «άλλες αιτίες».

Only hours after the catastrophic shipwreck on Lesvos that claimed 8 lives, 4 of them small children, Greek authorities arrested one of the passengers, a 20 year old Afghan man, and charged him of being a smuggler.
Only hours before, he had seen his wife and one of his children drown in front of him, helplessly watching, without him being able to rescue them, the worst experience imaginable. His other child was one of the survivors.
The 20 year old Afghan man explained in the preliminary hearing, that the real smugglers, who had stayed behind on the Turkish shore, as they normally do, had forced them to attempt the perilous crossing.

As deterrence, Greek authorities arrested the person who steers the boat, and he is charged with smuggling, endangering the other passengers lives, and if someone dies, their deaths. The court case is a farce, usually over in 15 minutes, no proper legal representation, many times without translations, so the accused don’t even know what is being said. A judge, more worried about what he will have for lunch, adds up the number of people onboard, multiplying it with the going rate of smuggling, and hands out a ridiculous prison sentences of 60-140 years.

Crete, Greece. On April 7, 2025, Emmanuel, a 19-year-old refugee from Sudan who lost half of his family during the war, will stand trial in Chania, on the Greek island of Crete. He faces charges of smuggling and the possibility of a life sentence—all because he handed out food and helped refill fuel during a desperate journey across the Mediterranean. He is one of nearly 40 very young Sudanese refugees, aged 17 to 20, currently held in Avlona Youth Prison on smuggling charges, threatened with life sentences.

Am Freitag ist ein Geflüchteter aus #Ägypten im Abschiebehaftzentrum #Paranesti in #Drama gestorben, wahrscheinlich an einem Herzinfarkt.
Es wird berichtet, dass es ihm psychisch schlecht ging. Er war per Boot aus #Libyen geflohen und befand sich schon 8 Monate im Haftzentrum.
Ihm war kurz zuvor mitgeteilt worden, dass er wohl noch weitere 10 Monate unter unwürdigen Bedingungen in Abschiebehaft bleiben und dann nach Ägypten abgeschoben werden würde.
Unter unwürdigsten Bedingungen werden in #Griechenland unbegl. Minderjährige im #CCAC auf #Samos inhaftiert - bezahlt von der #Schweiz. Die Kinder (die jüngsten sind gerade mal 10 Jahre) u. Jugendlichen werden dort teilw. über Monate weggesperrt, obwohl nach griech. Recht max. 25 Tage zu lässig wären., und selbst die wahrscheinlich mit europäischem Recht vereinbar sind.

Die hygienischen Bedingungen im CCAC sind fatal, es gibt zu wenig Matratzen, Decken, Kissen, das Essen ist unzureichend und oft ungenießbar. Und seitdem sich die staatl. Gesundheitsbehörde EODI 2024 zurück gezogen hat, haben die Menschen auch keinen Zugang mehr zu medizinischer Versorgung.

- The Coast Guard hid critical operational conversations from the Maritime Court prosecution
- All calls two and a half hours before the wreck were not shared
- Some calls were not formally recorded but can be heard in the background of other recordings.- The sound recordings show that the JRCC was instructing people on the boat to say they wanted to go to Italy and were trying to create a trail of evidence to this effect
- The sound recordings suggest the Greek authorities thought this was a convenient narrative for them.JRCC, while the collection of bodies from the sea was underway, instructed the captain of HCG vessel 920 to take & send the photo of a Syrian survivor who previously had made a statement to them. It's not clear what the statement was about but maybe it suited the narrative."
The Maritime Court Prosecutor's Office did not request & did not receive all the calls made to the JRCC during the period in question.
