Once again, for the people who joined from Twitter without a thorough cleanse:

Content Warnings are not censorship.
Content Warnings do not reduce your "reach".

Quite the contrary.

CWs mean people can reshare your post without worrying whether their own followers are in a headspace to read the content.

Same with filter tags. Properly tagged posts are safe to reshare.

Similar with AI-generated imagery: Posts without that vile slop are safe to reshare.

Unlearn the algorithm bullshit. Don't bring bad habits over here.

I 'boost' stuff I find interesting, or think needs more awareness, or is just damn funny.

I 'like' stuff to let the poster know I read it and appreciate/acknowledge/see the effort required to make the post. I may not agree with the sentiment but if it's in my locus of topics du jour I make an effort to acknowledge if relevant as an outlier.

Mastodon has no algorithms and I'm on a single user instance (i.e. just me!) so it is what it is - I guess. If you are offended by anything I post or respond to then let me know and we can talk about the topic.

A part of this might be that it’s interesting to see that the right-wing are picking up the real problems and mess on the left and then using it to forward their own ideological agenda. The need for #netiquette to mediate hostility on the #openweb hamishcampbell.com/the-need-fo

The thing about writing and supporting free software is that you don't actually owe any particular user anything, so when one of them sends you an email with an all-caps subject, you can respond like this: "I am happy to help people but I do not help strangers who yell at me. Please resend your message without the all-caps subject if you would like my assistance."

Would it make sense to classify demanding others to use Content Warnings and alt text as harassment?

Looking at the mastodon.social server rules at mastodon.social/about, which, of course, don't mention this.

It just seems like this should be up to moderators to enforce, if CWs and alt text are even required, not vigilante users.

Would love to hear other people's/admins' thoughts.

Hashtag your posts for finding, AND for filtering-out

Use specific hashtags to make your posts easier to find by search. Use general hashtags to make your posts easier to ignore by people who are not interested. Here are some general hashtags followed by specific ones they might cover:

  • tech: computers, software, internet
  • internet: Fediverse, Mozilla, WebBrowser, ActivityPub, Mastodon, PeerTube, Akkoma, Pleroma, Lemmy
  • software: Linux, BSD, Emacs, foss, UnixPorn, ProgrammingLanguage, Scheme, Lisp, Python, JavaScript
  • computers: RetroComputing, SBC, Laptop, SmartPhone, MechanicalKeyboard, WiFi, BlueTooth

From now on I will also try to only boost properly marked posts, since followers will see what I boost as well. If I really want to boost your post and it isn’t hash-tagged, I will link your post.

What prompted me to do this was that I was just talking with one of my online buddies, and she was saying how difficult it is on Mastodon to filter-out computer and tech-related posts. She wants to follow people like me and many others, but we have a tendency to post mostly about tech and computers. And since Mastodon is unfortunately still fairly niche and used mostly by tech-lovers, it is nearly impossible for her to filter out all the tech-related posts, no matter how many hashtag filters she sets up.

So what I am going to do, and I recommend you (dear reader) do the same, is always include very general hashtags that make it easier to filter out my post, along with more specific hashtags so people interested might find it.

Esiste una #fediquette?
La risposta breve è sì, ma abbiamo creato un post per spiegarlo meglio.
E ricordiamoci sempre che la parola #fediverso contiene le radici delle due parole più importanti per la socialità universale: alleanza e diversità.
