Librarians are dangerous: A public service announcement by Brad Montague

Dear Enthusiasts,

I write to you today as a concerned citizen.
Many aren’t brave enough to say it, but the time has come. So, I will say it:

Librarians are dangerous.

(Dramatic music should be playing in your head right now.)

You thought they were just keepers of the quiet. Guardians of the “shhh.”
The ones who handed you a dusty book and pointed to a beanbag chair.

Wrong.

20 police armed with tazers etc to arrest 6 women who hired a meeting room in Westminster Meeting House London, (where I worshipped for many years.)

Statement by Quakers highlights the increasing UK restrictions on right to protest and rights of juries to fairly judge such actions.

Quakers have a long history of non violent protest against injustice

The peril of the #DualState lies precisely in this capacity for targeted suppression. [Many]…people can ignore the construction of the #PrerogativeState simply because it does not touch their lives. They can turn away while dissidents & scapegoats lose their political #liberty. But once the prerogative state is built, as Fraenkel’s writing & experience suggest, it can swallow anyone.

How to protect mastodon servers from being shutdown by third parties? How to distribute them further? How to use tools like veilid or cwtch to continue exchange the files in case of third Party disruption of URLs used by activitypub at CDN/DNS level? How to make the new free social network resilient to any dictature controlling the internet communications (DNS, CDN,...)?

@w7voa Did anybody else initially read this as lamenting that *both* the #NewYorkTimes *and* #VOA were “flickering out”?

I wondered why by #Washington Post wasn’t included, but thought maybe Steve Herman was implying that flame of #liberty had already been extinguished.

On second reading, I understood and boosted the toot, since it was a gift article.

But sadly, my first take is what it seems like. 😞

"Concerned at the UK Government’s intentions to review the #HumanRights framework and #JudicialReview we have come together to state:

While every system could be improved, and protecting #rights and #freedoms for all is a balancing act, our #HumanRightsAct is a proportionate and well-drafted protection for the fundamental #liberties and #responsibilities of everyone in this country.

The Act guarantees the rights to #FreeSpeech and expression, to life, to #liberty, to security, to privacy, to assembly, and to #FreedomOfReligion or belief. It prohibits torture and guarantees fair trials and the #RuleOfLaw.

Judicial review is an indispensable mechanism for individuals to assert those rights and freedoms against the power of the state." humanrightsact.org.uk/
