Of the roughly 1 million named insect species on Earth, about 400,000 are beetles.

And that’s just the beetles described so far. Scientists typically describe thousands of new species each year.

So — why so many beetle species?

Entomologist Caroline Chaboo: “We don’t know the precise answer.”

But clues are emerging.

Front legs, who needs them right? It's not only mantis who dispense of them for walking. But to be fair midgets don't really ever walk. So the sensory neurons at the tips of their legs (hence flies can taste with their feet) may here have become part of a second pair of antennae.

Microtendipes sp. midget in full double antennae mode. The bushiness of its actual antennae suggests it's a male.

New on Entomology Today: Mosquitoes drink nectar (not just blood), but do they prefer nectar from some plants over others? A new research review shows mosquitoes do indeed have nectar preferences, and they vary across groups such as Aedes, Anopeheles, Culex. Researchers say knowing mosquitoes' nectar preferences can inform placement of attractive targeted sugar baits in mosquito control efforts. #entomology #insects #mosquitoes #flowers entomologytoday.org/2025/04/04

New on Entomology Today: The European earwig (Forficula auricularia) has been identified as a potential pest in citrus groves. Researchers have developed a cost-effective sampling method to study the earwigs' impact and movement, though thus far the economic impact of their damage to citrus crops has been "hard to pin down." #entomology #insects entomologytoday.org/2025/03/28
