Sharpe Way No. 590! Is Politics Ruining Gaming? 🎮🔥

Gaming has become more than just entertainment—politics has entered the industry, shaping everything from character design to storylines. Are these changes improving gaming, or are they hurting creativity and immersion? Are race and gender swaps, forced equity, and realism sacrificed for social justice making games better or worse? 🎭⚔️

Two more bugs in #Civ7 on #PS5 that I’ve run info.
- the legacy points don’t always notice when you’re doing them. I’ve got it waiting for me to “convert a foreign settlement” I have converted many, in foreign and distant lands. It still says “0/1”
- same with placing specialists. I place them, but they don’t always count.
- you can’t form alliances with city states. You can be their suzerain, but the alliance button never works. If they were my ally, and someone declared war on me, then the city state would declare war on them. Instead, I have piles of city state armies milling about on the map, getting in the way. But they don’t fight in my wars.

#Civ7 on #PS5 feels like Cyberpunk 2077 levels of buggy. Here’s stuff I’ve experienced.
- the Unicode bug in the screen caps below
- the resource assignment screen sometimes just glitches and won’t let me assign anything. I press o to back out, R1 to go back in, and it works
- I played multiplayer the first time last night and for half the session my friend did not get tooltips popping up. They’d work for a while, then they’d stop. We rebooted, reconnected and they just wouldn’t stay.

I'm close to getting my #VoiceAssistant working under #HomeAssistant. But suddenly my debian docker host can't resolve DNS. Just last night I did a docker pull and everything was fine. Now docker pull results in an error.

No biggie. Normally I'd just reboot it. But I can hear my teenager playing online games with his friends, and if I reboot that system and the pihole doesn't come back, he will kill me. So I will wait until he takes a break and go play #Civ7 instead.

🔗 I’ve been playing #Civ7 a bit. About to finish my fourth campaign. (Playing as Harriet Tubman and 4 different civs just went to war with me in the Modern age as I was relic farming.)

This article is correct. It is an unfinished release.

I am likely to be grinding MLB The Show over the next month. I hope Civ continues to find its much needed polish when I return. arstechnica.com/gaming/2025/03

I was experimenting with this glitch tonight. And then old Ben Franklin had to get all uppity and pusillanimous. So instead of making fun scouts and discovering the world from the comfort of my home, I had to go kick his ass.

There’s something I don’t understand about the war mechanic. After some number of turns the war just ended. Like any diplomatic action, it just kinda expired. I was on his doorstep. I was literally about to take his capital and suddenly all my dudes are bounced outside his perimeter and the war is over.

I had to wait some number of turns before I could declare war again and go finish the job.

I might just start another game. I want to play with the broken scouts and not get pulled into a war in like turn 20.

So there is a game-breaking glitch in #civ7 that my son saw on some YouTube channel. It’s fun.

Scouts have this mechanic where if they go into lookout mode, they get +1 extra hex of visibility. When they walk around, it goes away. If the Scout is in lookout mode and you suck them up into a Commander’s army, they keep the +1 when they’re walking around.

You can REPEAT it! If you go into lookout mode, it gets another +1. Pull them into an army and put them back down again. The +1s keep stacking. And on and on.

Do it enough times and you can have this Scout who can see half the world just walking around. Your sight range can cross oceans so you can discover wonders and city states on other land masses or out in the ocean. If you play the city state game you can befriend them and then even annex them. You could get settlements on another continent before you have learned how to sail to it.

I finished my first game of #civ7 last night. I had beautiful cities with lots of world wonders. My happiness was off the charts. I had tons of money and no unrest. I had food to spare and lots of political influence. My civilzation was the suzerain of 6 independent states who were all friendly with me. I went the ENTIRE GAME without a war. One settlement was sacked like 2000BC and that was my only military engagement in the entire game.

When the game ended I was told "You lost." Because some asshole launched a crewed spacecraft before me.

I hate to break it to you #civilization7 but I won. I created a happy society that went 5000 years without war, with support for the arts, with people living happy lives in beautiful cities. If that's losing, sign me up for losing all day long.

My last 2 #Civ7 sessions on the #PS5 have ended because the game crashed. Helpful, because it’s enough disruption that I snap out of “…one more turn…”

The UI is hella clumsy. Figuring out how to move resources between settlements is a pain. Information is literally missing in the game. You can’t figure out what some actions do. I’ll get notifications that say “△ Espionage Update”. And I press △ and it just goes away. Then I have to dig into the R1 menu to actually figure out what happened.

I’m suspicious about how well I’m doing. There are 6 leaders and I’m allied with 2 of them. I think that’s why nobody is killing me yet. But I’m scared because I am doing the cultural victory path and I have no armies. If I lose these alliances I am doomed.

There used to be a mechanic where you could ask an ally to join you in war against someone else. I can’t find that mechanic. I’ve been hoping to incite an ally to fight someone I don’t like, while I quietly sit back and let it happen.

I try to figure stuff out on my own before I reach for tutorials and tips. But it’s a lot to take in on a TV screen. And it’s not obvious to me which things I’m working on and which things I should be working on.

I did 104 turns tonight. So far I’m happy with everyone, making treaties, focused on art and music. Killing the odd barbarians that are nearby. But it feels like I’m not very active and I’m not making a lot of progress toward any particular victory condition. (I’m vaguely trying for the cultural victory). I’m expecting to be sitting here with my spearmen and archers and see some Sherman tanks roll up and blast me off the map.

Well, it’s the first night in my first game. Still plenty of stuff to try to learn. And I’m really looking forward to co-op play. Makes it much more interesting to me. Gee, interacting with humans is more interesting than interacting with AI. Who’d a thunk it?

#civilizationvii #videogames #ps5 #civ7

Tried out the new #civ7 on #ps5 tonight. I remember carrying a floppy with CIV.EXE to the computer lab at college. I haven’t played them all, but I did a bunch of civ 1, civ 4, and civ 6. Always on computers, but now I’m on a #consolegaming system and it’s different.

The UI is pretty clumsy. Easy to pick the wrong things. And you have a cursor that you have to move to the thing you want to select. And if your cursor is halfway across the map, I think you have to walk it hex by hex back to where you want to look.

Graphics are gorgeous. Voice acting is very good. Sound is excellent. But I’m not understanding some of the new mechanics.
