Good article by @sadhbhoneill on changing to more sustainable transport patterns. She makes the point that behavioral change is a collective endeavour which needs to be supported by the government and local authorities. Relying on individuals to change their behavior in the way Sadhbh has done is not going to achieve the necessary modal shift.

The Irish Times · I went car-free living in Waterford. Here’s how it’s goingBy Sadhbh O'Neill

In January '24, I took part in a consultation about improving local walking and cycling routes. The local rag was against it and people were apoplectic on social media.
The results are finally out and for 9 out of the 10 proposed routes, more than 50% of respondents were supportive.
Just goes to show why people should respond to the actual consultation, rather than whinging online 😂
Anyway, last night the council passed the LCWIP. Now they just need to get the funding...

The long-awaited Nuneaton to Coventry “super cycleway” may take a small step forward later this week with a tiny part of the route being put to the Portfolio Holder for Transport for approval. This features as part of a broader programme of road improvements and covers the south-most section through Exhall – only about 0.55km (0.35mi) and with serious compromises in quality.

Street Life North Tyneside have written a good response to the North East Combined Authority's local travel plan: streetlifentyneside.org.uk/202

Really, it's just a long list of demands, but they make sense. The point about how many dangerous junctions you have to cross when cycling from north tyneside to Newcastle resonates with me, and feels like an obvious priority for the cycle network.

streetlifentyneside.org.ukOur Response to the North East Combined Authority’s Local Travel Plan – Street Life North Tyneside

"What is needed now is a comprehensive shift towards smaller cars, lower speed limits and better cycling and pedestrian infrastructure.

All these steps taken together can have multiple benefits: fewer road deaths, less congestion, lowered fossil fuel emissions, less air pollutiona, nd better healthier more liveable cities.

So what are we waiting for?"

Very timely piece from Dr Catherine Conlon

Irish Examiner · Retrofitting our streets is the optimal road safety solutionBy Catherine Conlon

My kid's school, 1 month ago: "please drop off your children at the school gate to support of the school’s vision and values where our children are helped to build resilience and develop independence."

My kid's school, today: "We are concerned about the number of children waiting outside the school gate unsupervised at this time of the morning. The traffic that goes up and down the [the road] poses a danger to these children"

PICK A LANE, PLEASE.

A new school has been built where I live. It's got the first parallel crossing I've ever seen here. And the school has multiple bike racks.
If only there were safe bike lanes to actually get there...
Well, it's a start, I suppose 🤔
