David Wilkins<p>Yesterday’s rebodied Innocenti Mini presented Leyland with a ready-made modern replacement for the 1959 car, an opportunity that was not fully exploited. But there was plenty of life left in the British original, which continued for another quarter century, boosted by special editions such as this luxurious leather trimmed lapis lazuli blue version, a collaboration with the fashion designer Paul Smith. Snapped: The Great British Car Journey.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/davidsdailycar" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>davidsdailycar</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/Mini" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Mini</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/PaulSmith" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>PaulSmith</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/WeirdCarMastodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>WeirdCarMastodon</span></a></p>
David Wilkins<p>Although yesterday’s C Coupé was an example of Innocenti completely rebodying a car from its British partner BMC, later British Leyland, for the most of the sixties and into the early seventies, the Italian company built fairly standard versions of the Mini, 1100/1300 and Allegro, albeit with a few interesting refinements. The next full rebodying exercise came with this, the Innocenti Mini hatchback, in 1974. David Wilkins<p>The recently featured Austin Healey Sprite and MG Midget were big sellers. But did you know that these British sisters had a couple of arguably more glamorous Italian cousins, the Innocenti Spider convertible, and this car, the Spider’s fixed-head counterpart, the C Coupé? Sold between 1961 and 1968. The bodies were built by Ghia of Turin. Snapped at the Practical Classics resto show. Rare.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/davidsdailycar" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>davidsdailycar</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/AustinHealey" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>AustinHealey</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/MG" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>MG</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/Innocenti" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Innocenti</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/Ghia" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Ghia</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/WeirdCarMastodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>WeirdCarMastodon</span></a></p>
David Wilkins<p>In 1961, the Austin Healey Sprite lost the ‘Frogeye’ look sported by yesterday’s Mk1 version in favour of this more conventional look. The Sprite also acquired a badge-engineered MG sister, the Midget. I saw this Midget, like the Sprite, at the Practical Classics resto show. After yesterday’s Old English White, today we appear to have an example of British Racing Green. But tomorrow, something Sprite/Midget related that is less British…</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/davidsdailycar" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>davidsdailycar</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/AustinHealey" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>AustinHealey</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/MG" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>MG</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/WeirdCarMastodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>WeirdCarMastodon</span></a></p>
David Wilkins<p>Today, another random white car I came across while working back through my photo roll. Meet the Austin Healey ‘Frogeye’ Sprite. The colour is actually Old English White, a slightly ‘warmer’ parchment/cream shade traditionally seen on British cars over the years. An option of this name appeared on the Rover 75 paint chart, for example. The Frogeye spawned, if you’ll forgive the pun, a couple of spin-offs, of which more in the next two posts.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/davidsdailycar" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>davidsdailycar</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/AustinHealey" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>AustinHealey</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/WeirdCarMastodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>WeirdCarMastodon</span></a></p>

David Wilkins<p>Today, from 1975, the last ever Wolseley, seen here at the British Motor Museum a couple of weeks ago. For a few months, the car that later became the Leyland Princess, was sold in separate Austin and Morris versions, with the top models being Wolseleys. Among the refinements were Hydragas suspension, a vinyl roof and a very smooth, although not especially quick, transversely mounted 2.2-litre straight six engine. Nathan Avots-Smith<p>Okay, we have a complete outer body shell! Ready to start giving it some volume. Whitewall tires and classic Mercedes wheel covers go a long way to polishing up the look, too. <a href="https://weird.autos/tags/WeirdCarMastodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>WeirdCarMastodon</span></a> <a href="https://weird.autos/tags/164scale" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>164scale</span></a></p>
