A #VisionForW3C
"This document articulates #W3C’s organizational principles and the values that underpin its #mission; in other words, our vision for W3C as an organization in the context of our vision for the Web itself. The goal of this vision is not to predict the future, but to define shared principles to guide our decisions."

I’m happy to announce that something I and others have worked on very hard for the past few years has been published by the W3C Advisory Board (AB) and sent to the W3C Advisory Committee (AC) for a vote to make it official:
Vision for W3C: https://www.w3.org/TR/2025/NOTE-w3c-vision-20250402/
Official announcement: https://www.w3.org/news/2025/proposal-to-endorse-vision-for-w3c-as-a-w3c-statement/
If your company is a W3C Member¹, please ask your Advisory Committee Representative² to vote to support publication of the Vision for W3C as an official W3C Statement:

#DigitalSovereignity needs #StructuralPower
"Who enforces digital standards such as those that come from the #IETF or the #W3C?
In a few cases, it is state power (e.g. accessibility in some jurisdictions) but that's rare. In some other cases, it's market discipline… But most of the important areas of the #digitalsphere have stopped being open, competitive markets over a decade ago so that the market no longer has a credible disciplining function to enforce #standards. What matters is who has the #structuralpower to deploy the standards they want to see and avoid those they dislike."
@robin
(7/7) In short, we say #WebSocial instead of the #Fediverse to truly unlock the potential of what it can be, and that is a communication system built on top of established, decentralized technology, under the umbrella of none other than #W3C.
By unpoliticizing the word, we've basically given it verbage and actual purpose. Are you going to post content on #WebSocial with #ActivityPub? How will you do it? Single user? Multi user? Actual platform?
Giving creators that power can foster magic.

Forr those of you who still believe in something as an "open web" : Cloudfare, for one, is in a position to determine what you can use and can't to browse the web - and they are blocking everything non-bigtech. (Mozilla included in "bigtech" for this purpose):
When you are looking at implementing the current W3C recommendation to sign documents, and you need to travel to the future, 6 days.
Since 2009, I've been contributing to open web tools & standards, with a focus on CSS and related platform features at the W3C. But that work takes resources, making it hard for independent contributors like us @OddBird to stay involved.
We need support. If you appreciate what we're doing, you (or your company) can sponsor our work directly:

Let's keep building an open web for everyone.
A draft of ‘W3C Guidance on Applying WCAG 2.2 to Mobile’ is now available!
We’d really love your comments on the document in GitHub- we want to make sure these guidelines are clear for *everyone* who works on building mobile applications.

#iStatMenu で有名な #bjango の #Pinwheel というアプリ良さそう。
https://bjango.com/mac/pinwheel/
1/2 The Spatio-Temporal Data on the Web Working Group (#SDWWG) of the World Wide Web Consortium (#W3C) was recently re-chartered. The next two years I will be co-chairing this group with Rob Atkinson (#OGC).
There is a great deal brewing up in the #GeoSemantics space, to name just a few:
- #SOSA 2.0
- #GeoDCAT
- #WebVMW
- An #Ontology for Coordinate Reference Systems (#CRS)
- A #3D extension for #GeoSPARQL

Check out this "Comprehensive #Accessibility #Checklist for Web Projects" by the @a11ycollective. It's a good start for start for your journey into accessibility on the web...

In case you're lost, here is the map.

The #W3C has a WAI effort, which really stands for "Web Accessibility Initiative", but I always read it as "Working As Intended".

Other than that.. I started calling current AS/AP fedi the "as soon as possible" fediverse, where necessarily early app implementations served as the de-facto reference implementations for the #W3C #ActivityStreams and #ActivityPub open standards.
At serious cost: Ever increasing #ProtocolDecay and subsequent #WhackaMoleAdoption i.e. retaining app-by-app interop pipes against moving release targets.
When is Video domain getting standardized? That's my question.
wow i never thought they'd do it! The #w3c #CSS working group finally approves a parent selector for CSS, paving the way for CSS to finally become turing complete.
