@johncarlosbaez I've been thinking about this. I should have mentioned Shostakovich.
His relationship with Stalin and the Soviet state have been mythologized heavily, but his fears, despair, and persecution are well documented. And his music persists. There does seem to be a truth here about resistance, tenacity, and the refuge of one's art.
