[18:32] Timeline: How the North Sea tanker collision unfolded

A man has been arrested after the collision between a tanker and a cargo vessel in the North Sea. It happened near the Humber estuary yesterday and involved a US tanker and a Portuguese cargo ship.
While 36 people were safely brought ashore, one crew member is still missing and presumed dead.

Cape Verde's small population considered “white” was in turn divided into Portuguese-born officials and into those born locally, who the metropolitan #Portuguese derisively referred to as brancos da terra, and degredados, soldiers and civilians exiled for criminal or political reasons. The latter categories could include those of black #African and mixed descent, since in the Lusophone world “whiteness” was determined by political and economic power and by the ability to exhibit European cultural markers. Next to these “whites” there was a group of often mixed-race pardos, both free and enslaved. The lowest category, pretos, was made up of blacks who could be enslaved or freed, converts to Christianity and born on the islands or from numerous societies in western #Africa. By the end of the 17th c. at the latest, the Cape Verde islands had developed a distinct Creole identity. (2/7)

Today is International Mother Language Day (#IMLD) — a worldwide annual observance held on February 21 to promote awareness of linguistic and cultural diversity and to encourage #multilingualism.

I grew up in a monolingual #Spanish-speaking household but was exposed to #English and the #Galician variety of #Portuguese at an early age. Upon moving to Barcelona as a teenager, I adopted #Catalan.

The fact that I majored in #Translation may not come as a surprise.

As I near retirement my wandering eye is looking around for a place to live out the remaining days of my life. As a #procycling fan, Europe has always been on my bucket. It would seem that now is the time for me to move forward.

For a variety of reasons I am looking strongly at #Portugal as a leading contender.

If there are any expats or natives who would bit of spare time to chat with an open minded American, I would surely appreciate some advice and information.

I have started my journey by trying to learn #Portuguese , so if you are in the #LanguageLearning community and have ideas or resources for European Portuguese, I would really appreciate it. Brazil seems like a lovely place, but that is not where I want to go at the moment. 😉

If you see this and could take a moment to boost so maybe this can get a little more visibility, I sure would appreciate it!

It is reportedly the latest attempt by the nation to privatize the state-owned national airline, Bloomberg reported based on info from sources. This news will be of interest to Air France-KLM, who have shown interest in purchasing a stake in the airline in the past. The privatization process would reportedly begin in March and could be finalized at the end of this year or in 2026. Around 12 companies are interested in TAP.

I am currently convinced that the #Portuguese make the best desserts in the world. I will give bonus points to the French for crème brûlée (plus the Catalonians for their equivalent) and to the Italians for tiramisu. But damn, every dessert from #Portugal is great.

Doesn’t hurt to have it accompanied by amazing #Fado singing.
