There was some prior history of this. The Portland (OR.) PRIDE of the Continental Indoor Soccer League (a summertime #indoor #soccer league) had a deal with a #microbrewery to sponsor its pre- and post-game shows on radio. But they had not been able to secure a kit ad for it.
The MK RAMPAGE had players who wanted to play #indoor #soccer, but they had run into a perplexing snag. The #Milwaukee WAVE NPSL franchise was unenthused with its players playing outdoor soccer. Perhaps dreaming of soccer dominance in Milwaukee, it was antagonistic toward the MK RAMPAGE operation.
New York City had been a barren desert for indoor soccer franchises in whatever league there was. Twice in its years, the Major #Indoor #Soccer League's New York City franchise had _folded_ in mid-season. The NPSL was not insane enough to risk starting a brand new franchise there, especially considering how much funds it would have to expend. (more)
The team had lost their owner back in March 1994. The National Professional Soccer League had a codicil that teams which had lost their ownership would not be compelled to drop out of the League in mid-season.
At that time, the League had a national cable | satellite deal with ESPN. Additionally, ESPN was planning to expand to a second channel, and #indoor #soccer would be regularly shown on it. (more)
