Linuxguy<p>Also, the one in that video obviously isn't the setup utility for my model of laptop. It is an ASUS, but it isn't a laptop or even a ROG model. The setup utilities for all the ROG models have a different colour scheme. So whether or not mine will behave the same way I dont know. Imwould like to be sure before I change anything. The setup utility seems allot more limited than the ones for my desktop boards.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/ASUS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ASUS</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/ROG" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ROG</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/STRIX" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>STRIX</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/G18" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>G18</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Linux" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Linux</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/UEFI" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>UEFI</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/BIOS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>BIOS</span></a></p>
Linuxguy<p>The video also shows that you can restore factory keys for each category individually (PK KEK etc) by clicking on each one and clicking update. You see in the video that after the first catagory has had the factory keys restored the button for restore all factory keys disappears, but you can continue to restore the other categories keys the same way. It appears you can also append to the keys or load your own keys from file but im not sure of that.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/ASUS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ASUS</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/ROG" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ROG</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/STRIX" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>STRIX</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/G18" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>G18</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Linux" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Linux</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/UEFI" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>UEFI</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/BIOS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>BIOS</span></a></p>
Linuxguy<p>Maybe I am wrong. In this video, you see that the option to restore factory keys only appears after resetting to setup mode, which does clear all keys anyway I believe. And I think it will reset to setup mode and clear all keys anyway after turning secure boot off then on again. ASUS don't specifically mention these things on their website. <a href="https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=990PO3CH30Q" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">m.youtube.com/watch?v=990PO3CH</span><span class="invisible">30Q</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/ASUS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ASUS</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/ROG" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ROG</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/STRIX" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>STRIX</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/G18" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>G18</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Linux" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Linux</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/UEFI" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>UEFI</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/BIOS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>BIOS</span></a></p>

Linuxguy<p>But ASUS cloud recovery I understand needs secure boot enabled, with valid factory keys loaded. If you turn off secure boot to use Linux with extra drivers, those keys are unloaded. And the setup utility doesnt have an option to reload them See the pictures.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/ASUS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ASUS</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/ROG" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ROG</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/STRIX" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>STRIX</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/G18" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>G18</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Linux" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Linux</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/UEFI" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>UEFI</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/BIOS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>BIOS</span></a></p>
Linuxguy<p>Anybody who is planning to buy a Laptop to dual boot Windows and Linux - Do not buy a ROG STRIX G18. If Windows goes wrong, ASUS cloud recovery can put back Windows and all your OEM drivers, it's like a full factory reset of the files on tour SSD. But if you're dual booting you may run into a problem using it.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/ASUS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ASUS</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/ROG" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ROG</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/STRIX" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>STRIX</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/G18" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>G18</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Linux" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Linux</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/UEFI" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>UEFI</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/BIOS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>BIOS</span></a></p>
