Night Heron in Morning Light ©Debra Martz
This Yellow-crowned Night Heron was wide awake when I saw it early one morning. Perhaps it was watching the baby alligator below. Interestingly enough, I saw several alligators on this day in Alligator Lake along the Alligator Trail. I wonder how they came up with those names. :-)

A Whiskered Tern (Chlidonias hybrida) spotted at Kuala Sepetang, Perak, Malaysia on 2 April 2025. Spotted several birds, but only managed to get one reasonable shot as they veered through the air.

I spotted this Ladder-backed Woodpecker up high when I heard it drumming on the tree branch. Woodpeckers peck on objects to create sound patterns as communication, like songbirds use melodies. The tempo, rhythm, duration, and repetition of drumming patterns vary between different woodpecker species.

A Common Myna (Acridotheres tristis) spotted in Kuala Kangsar, Perak, Malaysia on 3 April 2025. Usually common, but not in urban areas, being displaced / replaced by the introduced Javan Myna. If you look closely at the eyes, you'll see an uncommon feature: a 'ring' of spots surrounding the iris.

The Redbud Tree has been stalled out for a few days with the cold, cloudy weather. The unopened buds add just a hint of color around this red-bellied woodpecker.
