Today in Labor History March 9, 1841: The U.S. Supreme Court issued a ruling that freed the remaining 35 survivors of the Amistad mutiny. In 1839, Portuguese slave traders had illegally transported 52 Mende people from west Africa to Cuba, on the Amistad, in violation of European treaties against the slave trade. Joseph Cinque led his fellow captive Africans in a mutiny, killing the cook and captain, and forcing the remaining crew to return them to Africa. The crew tricked them and sailed up the Atlantic coast, presuming they would be intercepted by the U.S. Navy, which captured the ship near Montauk, Long Island. President Martin Van Buren wanted to send the prisoners back to Spanish authorities in Cuba to stand trial for mutiny. However, the Court recognized the mutineers’ rights as free citizens. Abolitionists raised funds for the mutineers’ defense. Former President John Quincy Adams, who opposed slavery, represented them in court.

In July 1839, 53 enslaved Africans revolted aboard the Amistad and were arrested and tried for mutiny in Connecticut (their case eventually escalated to the Supreme Court and was an important moment in the abolitionist movement). During the trial, an artist named William H. Townsend drew some of the rebels. Kate McMahon, a historian of global slavery at the Smithsonian Institute, wrote for @TheConversationUS what these rare portraits tell us. "These portraits ... bring the massive, messy, contested story of slavery down to the scale of individual humans. Their visages call upon present and future generations to collectively imagine not only the horrors of the slave trade, but also the power of individual dignity and collective resistance," she writes.

Buenas!! Llevo aquí un tiempo, pero nunca había hecho propiamente una #presentación, y apenas he interactuado. Aprovechando que Twitter (o X) es un lugar ya muy poco agradable, me paso por aquí de nuevo para intentar quedarme .

No sé muy bien cómo hacerlo, pero @JanaDelBosco me ha recomendado contaros que actualmente estoy acabando mis estudios de grado en Filosofía, y que en general una gran parte de mis intereses giran en torno a ello. Me interesan particularmente la filosofía y epistemología social, la filosofía de la ciencia y la tecnología, y la ética del cuidado. También a veces escribo poesía y comparto algún poemilla o estrofa :).

Pero lo más probable es que acabe hablando de las cosas que leo o veo, sobre: #filosofía, #literatura, #política, #amor, #amistad, #sociedad, #poesía, #cine o #tecnología.

En términos políticos y sociales, simpatizo con posturas ecologistas-decrecionistas, anticapitalistas, antirracistas, antifascistas, feministas, inclusivas y diversas.

En general soy muy tímido para interactuar de entrada, y no estoy seguro de cómo de activo seré, pero estoy encantado de leeros en mi tl e interaccionar cuando sea posible .

La ideología #política no se puede reducir a una etiqueta, pero me verás posicionada del lado del #feminismo , del #antirracismo , del #decrecimiento ecológico, del #anticapitalismo ...

También tuiteo habitualmente de temas como el #amor , la #amistad y relaciones en general. ¡Ah! Y soy de Madrid, España.
