No, sweetheart, we’re not new. Not even ace #activism is new. You just heard of our existence the first time a few days ago. This has challenged your flawed notions about #sexuality but instead of accepting new information and LEARNING, you just grasp at excuses.

It’s just anti-intellectualism, and you’re embarrassing yourselves. Not us.

Anyone who calls the International #Asexuality Day a "fake oppression day" has NO idea what the fuck they’re talking about. It’s embarrassing.

And SMUG those weirdos are. "lol you're not murdered in the streets so it doesn't count".

It would be funny, if it weren’t so sad. We just want to tell the world it's OKAY to be #asexual, to educate people.

Discrimination is still real tho, I just cited scientific data. I guess that doesn’t count either then?

The results of the recent #ace #study "#Asexuality in the #UK: Public attitudes towards people who experience
little to no sexual attraction" have some not-so-encouraging numbers. I’ve decided to annotate some of the graphs in that paper.

("Direct" and "List" refers to different methods to present the prompt, see the paper for details)

4 annotated bar charts, each bar is annotated “these people are wrong”.

Belief that people cannot be asexual if they have sex. Direct: 41%, List: 24%.
The truth: While many asexuals don’t have any sex at all, this can’t be said for all asexuals. Some asexuals may decide to have sex, but for reasons other than feeling sexual attraction, e.g. aiming for pregnancy.

Belief that asexuality is a mental health problem. Direct: 26%, List: 19%
The truth: Asexuality is a sexual orientation, not a mental health problem. Many asexual people are happy withtheir identity, some even celebrate ace pride. :-)

Belief that asexuality can be cured by therapy. Direct: 31%, List: 31%
The truth: Trying to “cure” asexuality is conversion therapy, a practice that the scientific community denounces as dangerous pseudoscience that not only doesn’t work, but causes actual mental harm.

Belief that asexual people haven’t met the right person yet. Direct: 24%, List: 27%.
The truth: If you’re asexual, there isn’t a “right person” that can activate your “hidden” heterosexuality/homosexuality/bisexuality/etc. You’re just asexual.
The most extreme continuation of this flawed logic
is corrective rape, i.e. rape with the goal to change
someone’s sexual orientation.
