John Eckman<p><strong>Charlie Parker, The Mercury &amp; Clef 10-inch LP Collection</strong></p><p>This 2021 box collects / reproduces the 10″ LPs put out in the early 1950s:</p><ul><li>Charlie Parker With Strings (1950)</li><li>Charlie Parker With Strings <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://goatless.org/tag/2" target="_blank">#2</a> (1954)</li><li>Bird and Diz (1952)</li><li>Charlie Parker Plays South of the Border (1952)</li><li>Charlie Parker (1954) </li></ul><p>I don’t normally collect 10″ records, but got a good deal on this box, which is very well made, reproducing original covers and labels, and with an included book. Neither of the two “Charlie Parker With Strings” LPs actually has the <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://goatless.org/tag/2" target="_blank">#2</a> on it which can get confusing – the one with the two birds on it is the second. Most of these reproduce their Mercury labels except for the one just titled Charlie Parker which was only on Clef. </p><p>Artwork on all these covers by David Stone Martin. Players with Charlie Parker include Bernie Leighton, Buddy Rich, Ray Brown, Mitch Miller, Max Roach, Al Haig, Percy Heath, Thelonius Monk, Curly Russell, and Dizzy Gillespie (among others). Norman Granz wrote most (all?) the sleeve notes and supervised the recordings. </p><p>Still available in the <a href="https://store.ververecords.com/products/charlie-parker-the-mercury-clef-5lp-box-set-book?" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Verve Store</a> (and elsewhere I’m sure) it is well worth picking up. </p><p><a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://goatless.org/tag/10" target="_blank">#10_</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://goatless.org/tag/1950s" target="_blank">#1950s</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://goatless.org/tag/2" target="_blank">#2</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://goatless.org/tag/2021" target="_blank">#2021</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://goatless.org/tag/al-haig" target="_blank">#AlHaig</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://goatless.org/tag/bernie-leighton" target="_blank">#BernieLeighton</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://goatless.org/tag/box-set" target="_blank">#boxSet</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://goatless.org/tag/buddy-rich" target="_blank">#BuddyRich</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://goatless.org/tag/charlie-parker" target="_blank">#CharlieParker</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://goatless.org/tag/clef" target="_blank">#Clef</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://goatless.org/tag/curly-russell" target="_blank">#CurlyRussell</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://goatless.org/tag/david-stone-martin" target="_blank">#DavidStoneMartin</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://goatless.org/tag/dizzy-gillespie" target="_blank">#DizzyGillespie</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://goatless.org/tag/jazz" target="_blank">#jazz</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://goatless.org/tag/max-roach" target="_blank">#MaxRoach</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://goatless.org/tag/mercury" target="_blank">#Mercury</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://goatless.org/tag/mitch-miller" target="_blank">#MitchMiller</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://goatless.org/tag/norman-granz" target="_blank">#NormanGranz</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://goatless.org/tag/percy-heath" target="_blank">#PercyHeath</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://goatless.org/tag/ray-brown" target="_blank">#RayBrown</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://goatless.org/tag/reissue" target="_blank">#Reissue</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://goatless.org/tag/thelonious-monk" target="_blank">#TheloniousMonk</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://goatless.org/tag/vinyl" target="_blank">#vinyl</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://goatless.org/tag/vinylcollection" target="_blank">#vinylcollection</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://goatless.org/tag/vinylfinds" target="_blank">#vinylfinds</a></p>
John Eckman<p><strong>Neil Young with Crazy Horse, World Record, 2022 on Reprise</strong></p><p>Great to have Neil Young put out a new album in 2022, his fifteenth with Crazy Horse (including Nils Lofgren, Ralph Molina, and Billy Talbot). John Eckman<p><strong>Bob Dylan, Bob Dylan, 1962 on Columbia</strong></p><p>Dylan’s debut album – what a wonderful record. I’ve had multiple different copies, trying to find the best balance of pressing and condition. My current one is a repressing with the Columbia label with gold type around the outside, which was in use from the 70s into the 90s. The “PC 8579” means it was a discounted repressing – they started using the PC prefix in 1973. Comparing to the <a href="https://www.searchingforagem.com/1960s/International001.htm" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">all the details here</a>, it’s probably a late 70s pressing. The runouts are a mix of metalwork from Pitman and Santa Maria (Columbia record pressing plans in NJ and CA respectively). </p><p>Mostly traditional folk songs here, plus “Song to Woody” (which features prominently in the recent Dylan biopic <em>A Complete Unkown</em>) and “Talkin’ New York” – all recorded in 1961 at Columbia in New York. </p><p>Not a bad version in the bunch, but one of my favorites is “Baby Let Me Follow You Down.” Via Crossroads Records in Portland OR. </p><p><a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://goatless.org/tag/1960s" target="_blank">#1960s</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://goatless.org/tag/1962" target="_blank">#1962</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://goatless.org/tag/bob-dylan" target="_blank">#BobDylan</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://goatless.org/tag/columbia" target="_blank">#Columbia</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://goatless.org/tag/crossroads-records" target="_blank">#CrossroadsRecords</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://goatless.org/tag/portland-or" target="_blank">#PortlandOR</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://goatless.org/tag/vinyl" target="_blank">#vinyl</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://goatless.org/tag/vinylcollection" target="_blank">#vinylcollection</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://goatless.org/tag/vinylfinds" target="_blank">#vinylfinds</a></p>
John Eckman<p><strong>Gerry Mulligan, California Concerts, 1955 on Pacific Jazz</strong></p><p>Collection of live recordings featuring the Gerry Mulligan Quartet on the A-Side and the Gerry Mulligan Sextet on the B-Side. The quartet here is with Jon Eardley, Red Mitchell, and Chico Hamilton; the sextet with Bob Brookmeyer, Zoot Sims, and Larry Bunker with Eardly and Mitchell. </p><p>The A-side was recorded at Stockton High School in November 1954, the B-Side at Hoover High School in San Diego. </p><p>My copy is an original mono pressing on Pacific Jazz from 1955, via Crossroads Records in Portland OR. John Eckman<p><strong>The Waterboys, Out of All This Blue, 2017 on BMG</strong></p><p>Mike Scott, the creative force behind The Waterboys, has continued to make interesting music and evolve their sound – here incorporating more contemporary pop sounds. It’s a double album, with a third record of “blue variations.” Some of the tracks have lots of instrumentation (strings, brass, overdubs) and some seem to be recorded on the fly with just guitar or piano and drum machine with Scott singing solo. </p><p> Among guests, there some fiddle via Steve Wickham (who played the violin on “Sunday Bloody Sunday”), brass and string arrangements by Trey Pollard, and bass from Patterson Hood’s dad David Hood. </p><p>It’s a big sprawling three record collection but I love it. Still so much talent! </p><p>My copy is the 3xLP Deluxe edition, via Crossroads Records in Portland OR. </p><p><a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://goatless.org/tag/2010s" target="_blank">#2010s</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://goatless.org/tag/2017" target="_blank">#2017</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://goatless.org/tag/bmg" target="_blank">#BMG</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://goatless.org/tag/crossroads-records" target="_blank">#CrossroadsRecords</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://goatless.org/tag/david-hood" target="_blank">#DavidHood</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://goatless.org/tag/mike-scott" target="_blank">#MikeScott</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://goatless.org/tag/portland-or" target="_blank">#PortlandOR</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://goatless.org/tag/steve-wickham" target="_blank">#SteveWickham</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://goatless.org/tag/the-waterboys" target="_blank">#TheWaterboys</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://goatless.org/tag/trey-pollard" target="_blank">#TreyPollard</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://goatless.org/tag/vinyl" target="_blank">#vinyl</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://goatless.org/tag/vinylcollection" target="_blank">#vinylcollection</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://goatless.org/tag/vinylfinds" target="_blank">#vinylfinds</a></p>
John Eckman<p><strong>David Bowie, Unplugged &amp; Slightly Phased: Acoustic Broadcasts 1996, 2021 on Parachute Recording Company</strong></p><p>Basically a live bootleg, this collects Bowie’s appearances at the October <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bridge_School_Benefit" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">1996 Bridge School Benefit.</a> Parachute Recording Company labels these things as radio transmissions based on the difference in copyright law regarding things broadcast in the UK (and maybe the EU?). </p><p>It was previously released as a bootleg under multiple names by different labels – this version was released in 2021, and says it is under license from Leftfield Media, which (as <a href="https://www.discogs.com/label/240121-Leftfield-Media?page=1" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">per Discogs</a>) “Issues semi legal releases using a hole in the European copyright laws concerning recorded public broadcasts.”</p><p>My copy via Waterloo Records in Austin TX – it’s a nice clean 2xLP pressing (from GZ Media) and sounds pretty good for an unauthorized bootleg – you could believe this could have been broadcast. </p><p><a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://goatless.org/tag/1990s" target="_blank">#1990s</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://goatless.org/tag/1996" target="_blank">#1996</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://goatless.org/tag/2021" target="_blank">#2021</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://goatless.org/tag/austin-tx" target="_blank">#AustinTX</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://goatless.org/tag/bootleg" target="_blank">#Bootleg</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://goatless.org/tag/bridge-school-benefit" target="_blank">#BridgeSchoolBenefit</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://goatless.org/tag/david-bowie" target="_blank">#DavidBowie</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://goatless.org/tag/parachute-recording-company" target="_blank">#ParachuteRecordingCOmpany</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://goatless.org/tag/vinyl" target="_blank">#vinyl</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://goatless.org/tag/vinylcollection" target="_blank">#vinylcollection</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://goatless.org/tag/vinylfinds" target="_blank">#vinylfinds</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://goatless.org/tag/waterloo-records" target="_blank">#WaterlooRecords</a></p>
John Eckman<p><strong>The Replacements; Sorry Ma, Forgot to Take Out the Trash; 1981 on Twin/Tone</strong></p><p>This was the debut album of Minneapolis’ own The Replacements, in all its ragged glory. Somehow – likely because of how I acquired them – I’d always thought that Stink! (the EP) came out before Sorry, Ma – but it was the other way ’round. </p><p>I don’t usually by CDs these days, but this reissue came in a 4 CD plus 1 LP, including a remastered version of the original album, two CDs of demos, outtakes, &amp; alternate versions, one live CD (<a href="https://goatless.org/2023/09/19/the-replacements-unsuitable-for-airplay-the-lost-kfai-concert-2022-on-twin-tone" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Unsuitable for Airplay</a>) and a vinyl LP of an alternate version of the original album. </p><p>My copy via Bull Moose Records in Portsmouth NH</p><p><a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://goatless.org/tag/1980s" target="_blank">#1980s</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://goatless.org/tag/1981" target="_blank">#1981</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://goatless.org/tag/2021" target="_blank">#2021</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://goatless.org/tag/bull-moose-records" target="_blank">#BullMooseRecords</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://goatless.org/tag/cd" target="_blank">#CD</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://goatless.org/tag/portsmouth-nh" target="_blank">#PortsmouthNH</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://goatless.org/tag/reissue" target="_blank">#Reissue</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://goatless.org/tag/the-replacements" target="_blank">#TheReplacements</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://goatless.org/tag/twin-tone" target="_blank">#TwinTone</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://goatless.org/tag/vinyl" target="_blank">#vinyl</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://goatless.org/tag/vinylcollection" target="_blank">#vinylcollection</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://goatless.org/tag/vinylfinds" target="_blank">#vinylfinds</a></p>
