Timothy Shortell<p>More than 30 years ago I wrote my doctoral dissertation in social psychology on Archbishop Oscar Romero and the Salvadoran church. Romero was murdered by a death squad on this day in 1980. His sermons were broadcast by radio; at the time he was the only opposition voice that could be heard nationally. He spoke to the soldiers in a sermon shortly before he was murdered, telling them not to kill their brothers and sisters who protested the oligarchy. Seems relevant again. <a href="https://sciences.social/tags/SociologyOfReligion" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SociologyOfReligion</span></a></p>
Timothy Shortell<p>In my course on Christian nationalism in the contemporary US, we're using subculture identity theory and social identity complexity theory to explore the relationship between CN and antipathy toward racial, religious, and cultural minorities.</p><p>Much of the work in this area has been done by Andrew Whitehead and Samuel Perry and their colleagues.</p><p><a href="https://sciences.social/tags/SociologyOfReligion" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SociologyOfReligion</span></a> <a href="https://sciences.social/tags/ChristianNationalism" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ChristianNationalism</span></a> <a href="https://sciences.social/tags/SocialPsychology" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SocialPsychology</span></a> <a href="https://sciences.social/tags/Sociology" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Sociology</span></a></p>
Timothy Shortell<p>In my data analysis and visualization class this week, I'm introducing the students to interactive mapping with geopandas and folium. We're going to be using open data from Massachusetts to ask questions about the spatial distribution of religion. Here's a map of the places of worship in the state (according to the database on the open data portal). <a href="https://sciences.social/tags/DataViz" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>DataViz</span></a> <a href="https://sciences.social/tags/SociologyOfReligion" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SociologyOfReligion</span></a> <a href="https://sciences.social/tags/Sociology" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Sociology</span></a> <a href="https://sciences.social/tags/Mapping" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Mapping</span></a> <a href="https://sciences.social/tags/Python" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Python</span></a></p>
